In 1803 the United States purchased some land from France. The Louisiana Purchase added 828,000 square miles of land to the United States.

Even though it’s called the Louisiana Purchase we bought more than the state of Louisiana. It covers an area of 15 present states and 2 Canadian Provinces.

What was the Westward Expansion?

“Westward Expansion” describes the widespread movement of settlers to the American West during the 19th century (1801-1900).

Many factors contributed to the people wanting to settle in the west.

Especially the opportunities to work and make more money and to start a better life for their families.

Settlers:

Persons who settle in a new colony or move into a new country.

What is Westward Expansion?

“Westward Expansion” describes the widespread movement of settlers to the American West during the 19th century (1801-1900).

Even though it is called westward expansion, critiques point out not everybody moved to the west and the term is inaccurate.

For many Native Americans the movement of the settlers onto the their lands was considered “invasion” and “dispossession”

Dispossession: The action of depriving someone of land, property, or other possessions.

“Manifest” means Obvious or Clear

So to America, “Manifest Destiny” is their purpose in the world

Where did the phrase Manifest Destiny come from?

  • Far before the phrase “Manifest Destiny” was created, it had already been an idea that was in use.
  • During the American revolution, a political philosopher named Thomas Paine wrote about America’s opportunity to “begin the world over again”
  • People had believed that America was special and should set an example for all other countries.

The phrase, “Manifest Destiny” was officially coined by John L. O’Sullivan. It was seen in one of his articles where he promoted the acceptance of Texas as the 28th state. He wrote:

  • “Our Manifest Destiny is to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.”

Homesteads

The Government wanted people to go West, so they offered people free land in 1862.

Congress passed a law called the Homestead act. This allowed people to apply for 160 acres of free land.

The plots of land were called “homesteads”.

Rules to claim the land:

  • You must be 21 years old or the head

of household

  • You must be a U.S. citizen or want to become a citizen.
  • You must agree to live on, improve, and farm the land for at least 5 years.

Why Did People Move West?

People moved West for a number of reasons:

  • Lots of Land: Homestead Act
  • The East Coast was Crowded: Population growth was at a high rate
  • Opportunities to get Rich/Better Jobs: Mining, Farming, and Logging
  • Advances in Transportation: Railroads, Canals, and Steamboats
  • Finding Gold: California Gold Rush of 1849
  • Religious Reasons: To avoid persecution
  • Manifest Destiny
