Create joints between components

  • Click and drag from data panel to insert component file into main file

  • Type “J” and define all DOF between 2 components using “joint origins”

  • Note: This is the opposite of SW or many other CAD software where you remove degrees of freedom with each mate. Therefore, any two components should only have one joint.

Types of Joints

  • Rigid- limits all DOF
  • Revolute- rotation around one axis
  • Slider- translation on one axis
  • Cylindrical- one translation, one rotation axis
  • Pin slot- one translation, one rotation different axis
  • Planar- 2 translational, one rotational axis
  • Ball- 3 degrees rotation
  • As Built- locks position of 2 parts in CAD as constructed in the file. Should only be used if joint with offset join origin is not an option.

Import CAD from vendors

  • McMaster, Misumi, and other common vendors have downloadable CAD files that can be uploaded to Fusion and used in designs
    • McMaster shortcut: Insert > Insert McMaster-Carr Component

Quick hide for bodies

  • Use the “V” key to hide/show bodies.
  • Useful for accessing internal features of a multi-body part.

Create simplified geometry

  • Creating simplified features to act as stand-ins for off the shelf components, existing hardware, or unknown geometry can illustrate an idea without necessarily needing to fully define everything.
  • Useful when working with electrical systems to give you a better sense of how much space those subsystems will require.

Create hotkeys

  • Add a new hotkey by clicking 3 dots to right of feature→ change keyboard shortcut
  • Suggested shortcuts:
    • Normal to surface: N
    • Zoom to fit: Z
    • New sketch: Ctrl+N
    • Parameters: P

Pattern Stuff

  • Patterning your geometry can save a lot of design work.
  • Rectangular pattern allows for X/Y copies, while circular patterns require a center point to revolve around.

Direct Editing

  • Method of modeling that is not driven through geometric or defined relationships.
  • Not good practice for a whole model
  • Can save a lot of time or be effective for imported models (without associated timeline).
  • Press Q to enter push pull
    • depending on which face you select, you will get different editing options.
