What is a World Food Prize Youth Institute?

  • Developed by the World Food Prize Foundation
  • Goal: inspire and increase youth interest/participation in the fight against hunger
  • Youth Institutes hosted by universities around the world

Why Food Security – Dr. Borlaug

  • Raised in Northeast Iowa
  • 1970 winner of Nobel Peace Prize
  • Developed wheat varieties with broad and stable disease resistance, broad adaptation to growing conditions, and high yield potential
  • Transformed ag production in Mexico, Latin America & Asia
  • For his achievements, it is said that he has saved “more lives than any other person who has ever lived”

Why Food Security – Today’s Grand Challenge

  • In 2021, 702 – 828 million people were affected by hunger. That is 150 million more since the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • In 2021, 11.7% of world population faced food insecurity at severe levels
  • Projected that nearly 670 million people (8%) will be facing hunger in 2030 (same as 2015 numbers)
  • Population expected to be at 9.8 billion people by 2050

Why Youth Programs

Dr. Borlaug believed in the next generation, and it was his mission to inspire students around the world by providing educational and professional experiences in food security and agricultural issues.

Today, WFPF partners with higher education institutions to host these events for high school students.

  • Engage with peers, experts, and researchers to learn about global food security and share their ideas to address these issues

  5. Explore and propose solutions

  • Why should we care? Food wasted is also land, water, energy, labor and money wasted.
  • Solution(s): GMOs, consumer education, composting, shopping smarter, food rescue programs
