Caiti- Contain spices in containers - sealed/airtight

  • Store seasonings
    • Airtight containers
      • Spices lose taste/flavor if left open
      • Longer left out = Duller the flavor
        • Prevent: Airtight containers
  • NASA’s bags can keep food good or 18 months
  • Previously learned info.:
    • Foods kept in bags - food to spices?
  • A NASA website called “tupperware takes to space” stated: “Now a manufacturer of iconic, household plasticware is helping provide fresh food in space.”

Spices can get dimmer/less flavorful by leaving them out, without being sealed. This is an issue because without keeping the spices fresh with flavor, foods that regularly have flavor will become dim, and nobody wants dull foods on the first day of their mission, or bland foods in general! (Keeping spices sealed is IMPORTANT).

In turn, Techshot reached out to Tupperware to help create the new system that would provide an alternative to the plant pillows. -NASA -Our knowledge:The brand Tupperware is an airtight container brand, which can hold and keep spices “fresh.” (flavorful)

Vienna- How to liquify spices/seasonings for traveling in transit

#1 “Can seasonings be liquified?”

Liquid Seasoning

  • Food and beverage manufacturers turn to Trilogy's liquid seasonings because they deliver maximized flavor, color, pungency and heat, resulting in lower cost-in-use than traditional ground spices.

#2 “How do you liquify spices?”

  • When converting a dry spice or seasoning into a paste or liquid its quite simple: equal parts spice, oil, and water.
    • You can use broth or any juice for a substitute of water - more flavor
    • Food like cinnamon might be a good mix with apple juice to taste like apple pie but, a spice like basil is more savory so it would go well with a broth.
    • Depending on the spice there could be a extract or oil already made

All group members: Making spices spicer

We researched how condensing down spices that are already spicy can make spices spicer. So, we want to try that thisys for other spices to make their flavor way more strong for the astronauts because, we know they lose most of their taste in space and they love spicy seasonings and we want are astronauts to enjoy the food there given.

Carmen-

Fluids in the body are affected by the reduced gravity conditions. On earth, gravity acts by the fluid in our bodies and pulls into our legs.In space, this fluid is distributed throughout our body. When food seems to lose its flavor, astronauts usually ask for condiments, such as hot sauces, to give food some intensity of taste. A variety of condiments are available for the crewmembers to add to their food such as honey, and sauces like soy sauce, BBQ, and taco. The retention of fluids in the head can have the same effect as congestion from a cold or virus. Congestion lessens the ability to smell and, therefore, taste food, which can lead to a preference for hot peppers and other spicy items. Socializing during meal time is essential for mental health and happiness.
