Located north of Magome, Tsumago, and Kiso-Fukushima, the Torii Pass was one of the most challenging sections of the Nakasendō during the Edo period. This guided walk covers approximately 6 km from Yabuhara-juku to Narai-juku, where you can immerse yourself in history and culture along the way. Upon reaching Narai-juku, you will be greeted by a streetscape that feels like stepping back in time to the Edo period.
Adjacent to Narai-juku, Kiso-Hirasawa is a town that has flourished as the only lacquerware production centre on the Nakasendō and has been designated as an Important Traditional Buildings Preservation District. With a local guide, visit the workshops of skilled lacquer artisans and admire their craftsmanship.
