10 Research-Based Commonalities for Strong Formative Assessments (Cizek, 2010)

1. Requires students to take responsibility for their own learning. (Empowerment?)

2. Communicates clear, specific learning goals. (Should students pick these?)

3. Focuses on goals with outcomes that apply beyond the learning context. (Authentic?)

4. Identifies current knowledge/skills and steps necessary for reaching the goals.

5. Requires development of plans for attaining the goals.

8. Provides frequent, embedded assessment, including peer and student self-assessment.

9. Includes feedback that is non-evaluative, specific, timely, and related to the goals and which provides opportunities for revision and improvement to deepen understanding.
