  • The heart has enormous Oxygen demand at rest (5% of the cardiac output and 80% of O2 tissue extraction).

  • The heart has enormous Oxygen demand at rest (5% of the cardiac output and 80% of O2 tissue extraction).

  • When O2 requirement increases (i.e. exercise), O2 supply only can be increased by increasing the coronary flow.

  • In normal conditions (rest & exercise), the microcirculation autoregulates the blood flow by dilatation via endogenous adenosine.

  • During maximal hyperemia (maximal microcirculatory dilation via exogenous adenosine) the perfusion pressure (Pd) is proportional to the coronary flow.

  • During maximal hyperemia (maximal microcirculatory dilation via exogenous adenosine) the perfusion pressure (Pd) is proportional to the coronary flow.

    • According to the Ohm’s law, if we know the coronary flow and the Pd, then the minimal microcirculatory resistance can be easily calculated.
