About the flame

The ethanol poured into the bottle is very volatile and vaporizes as the liquid is swished around. The flame on the wooden splint tossed into the neck of the bottle acts as the activation energy for the combustion of ethanol with the surrounding oxygen in the air.

This is an exothermic reaction. Not only

does the exothermic nature of the reaction

result in the bottle heating up, but also the

characteristic whoosh sound!

Combustion Reaction

Formula:

C2H5OH(l)+3O2(g)->2CO2(g)+3H2O(g)

The reaction of ethanol with oxygen is characterized as a combustion reaction, with the products being CO2 and H2O.

In the reaction, the carbon atoms are oxidized whereas the oxygen atoms are reduced.
