Hello! My name is Melissa Smith and this is my seventh year at Simpsonville Elementary. I have previously taught at Sue Cleveland Elementary for 11 years in both first and second grades. This is also my seventh year teaching third grade! I hope you are excited as I am for this adventure!

I graduated in 2006, from Southern Wesleyan University with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education. In 2012, I married my husband, Timothy Smith. We have 3 children. Our oldest is our 8-year-old son named Cruz. He is also in third grade at SES! He loves trains, modeling clay, drawing, making stop motion videos, and going to any playground we can take him to. In April 2022, we added to our family with identical twin girls, Liliana and Elena. They are one and love to explore the world. We are loving every minute of being a family of 5.  I love to exercise, read, decorate, and spend time with my family!

Communication

Grades will be sent home each Tuesday with your child in their HERO binders. It will have all graded assignments, tests, newsletter, and behavior info. Anything that needs to be signed and returned will be placed in the “Return to School” pocket. Other items will be placed in the “Keep at Home” pocket and do not need to be returned. They are responsible for opening it up every morning and giving me notes, homework, etc. Please download the app for Class Dojo. I share news, pictures, links, newsletters, behavior and so much more! It also translates if you need it!

I will utilize Class Dojo Messages (the best and easiest way to reach me) notes, emails, and voicemail to get in touch with you. Please don’t ever hesitate to do the same!

Welcome to Third Grade!

Attendance

Students are expected to be in their seats by 7:45 am. No early dismissals after 1:45 pm.

School is dismissed at 2:15 pm.

Our lunch is at 11:30am.

Snack

We will have a snack after related arts. Students are responsible for bringing one snack. Please choose a healthy snack (no cookies or candy). Crackers, yogurt, fruit, protein bars, bake chips, popcorn etc (no takis). Due to allergies, we will not share snacks. Please bring a water bottle with just water (no add-ins). We often have spills and we want to avoid sticky ones! Thanks!

Behavior Expectations

Good behavior is essential to learning! I will use Class Dojo for behavior management in which your child can earn incentives or lose privileges based on their decisions. I encourage my kids to make good choices concerning their behavior- if there is a doubt, it’s probably not a good idea!

Homework

There will be no set daily/weekly homework this year. Your child is responsible for studying for any quizzes, tests, and memorizing their multiplication and division facts. If I see that the class needs more practice on a skill, I will send homework home for extra practice. There is not always a study guide for every test or quiz. But please take advantage when there is one. If daily work is not completed in class, then they are responsible for completing it and returning it the following day.

Tests and Quizzes

You will get notice of an upcoming test or quiz on their agendas. Most tests or quizzes are open notes. However, they will need to learn how to apply the notes for their quizzes and tests- which is a skill they usually have to learn. I know that evenings are busy at home, but planning ahead and studying with your kiddo is so important. Learning to study and using notes is such a valuable life skill.
