FOCUS AREA: DATA POLICY
TL;DR: In return for the support and access to Tetiaroa provided by Tetiaroa Society, participants in research projects join the Tetiaroa IDEA - a collaborative project to build a digital simulation (avatar) of the atoll.
Participants in the Tetiaroa IDEA agree to make their metadata and prepublication data available to each other through a “Tetiaroa Data Trust” that facilitates data re-use according to mutually agreed terms and a code of conduct.
The Tetiaroa Data Trust follows FAIR+CARE data principles and is distributed across repositories that meet global standards in research data stewardship.
This policy does not impose legally-binding conditions nor replace or impinge on legal obligations that might apply elsewhere.
Data Trusts
“At present, most data relationships are written as exceptionally permissive, or outright open, licences. The act of creating a data trust, by contrast, is inherently specific, requiring the parties involved to agree on a common purpose, a governance structure and a clear theory of shared benefit.”
FOCUS AREA: DMPTool
58k+ users with 55k+ data management plans at 296 participating institutions
Platform for DMP creation and guidance with the goal of creating a bridge for researchers to discuss research data with librarians
Existing NSF EAGER grant to create next-generation, machine-actionable DMPs
FOCUS AREA: INTEGRATE WITH EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE

Tetiaroa is a private atoll that is mostly managed as a Natural Reserve by Tetiaroa Society 501c3. One of the islets is the site of an award winning LEED Platinum eco resort - The Brando. The hotel as provided a research station for Tetiaroa Society, which is managed in partnership with UC Gump Station.
