  • Has the PC/laptop been turned on when you are away?
    • Is this authorized?
    • Someone can try different combinations for your password
    • How long is the computer turned on without permission?
    • Twenty minutes would allow a skilled person to add an account and use that account to log in

Prevention steps

  • Create strong passwords   
  • 2-factor  or “multi-factor” authentication whenever possible
  • Lock screen whenever you leave your computer
  • Install the best anti-virus program
  • Watch for shoulder spying when logging on
  • Always shutdown after using your laptop or PC
  • Store laptop in a locked area

Install a strong antivirus software

  • I recommend Bitdefender, Windows built in anti-malware and anti-virus software is good, but Bitdefender is one of the top anti-virus software protection packages.
  • Pay attention to your Anti-Virus software, run and check often your system, it should always be running!

  • Unknown programs requesting access
  • Anti-virus software is constantly turned off

  • Wipe the computer and reinstall, rarely do people have the technical skills to remove a skilled hacker’s software from their operating system
  • Purchase a refurbished Chromebook, very difficult to hack and a great device for financial and online shopping.
  • iPads are very secure but more expensive
  • Change all passwords that might have been exposed
  • Watch all financial accounts carefully
