Problem

A very big problem in the fashion industry is fast fashion. Fast fashion is where clothes that are trendy at the time get sold out quickly but as soon as a different fashion style is more popular people throw out those clothes. When you throw out clothes you can either reuse them or you can just put them in the garbage. A lot of people most likely choose the second option because it is easier and faster. But when you throw out your clothes it can hurt the environment. It hurts the environment by not reusing the things you already have and forcing machines to use more fossil fuels as you buy more clothes. The more fossil fuels we use the more it hurts our environment.

Solution

I think that a small solution to help reduce using these fossil fuels and people throwing out old clothes is to make new clothes out of old ones. Most people can do this at home if they have a sewing machine. It is an easy way to help the environment and a fun way to make something new.

Option 1

Make a collection of clothes and give them to a recycling facility.

Option 2

Arrange for lots of people to bring in clothes and donate them to an organization that gives people clothes who need them

Option 3

Make a piece of clothing out of recycled materials.

I chose option 3 because I love to sew and I have always wanted to make a piece of clothing. I also chose it because I have really wanted to do something with recycled materials for a while and this idea was my favorite.

How you can help!

You don’t have to choose the same one I did but try to consider the other options to help reduce fast fashion in your own way. Also if you want to do option 3 but don’t know how to sew you can find free online lessons easily. Have fun!

The first step you have to do is find clothes that you don’t like anymore or don’t fit you.

The second step is to cut up these clothes in a way where you can make a shape to easily sew into the piece of clothing you want.

The third step is to sew!! The most important thing when sewing is to just have fun because no matter what you do you are helping the environment.
