  1. In brackets, show where the exposition begins and ends.

  • Identify the protagonist & antagonist

  • Identify the setting
  1. How does this introduction set up expectations for the reader?
  2. How are they characterized? Look at descriptions, dialogue, interactions, etc
  3. What mood is created by the description of the setting?

Where is the conflict introduced? What type of conflict is it?

What does that symbolize beyond just the story?

What are 3 significant events in the rising action?

What do these events show the reader?

What is the climax?

How does the goal for the protagonist change? What does that suggest about human behavior?

What part functions as the falling action?

This is where the theme really comes to light. How does this part of the narrative shape the theme?

What is the resolution?

The last couple lines of any story always provide a “punch” of sorts. Break down the language of it carefully.

TED Talk: “What Reality Are You Creating for Yourself”

  • The speaker uses two techniques in the introduction to his speech.
    1. What are they?
    2. How do they emotionally appeal to the audience? (What sort of emotional response is the speaker hoping for with each one?)

  • What is the speaker’s main claim? Copy it down verbatim (don’t forget to cite the time stamp).

  • List the sensory details that the speaker uses to characterize his deteriorating sight. How do these descriptions contribute to the mood? (remember, this is different than tone)
