We are considering endorsement in...

  • A limited number of races (so we can focus efforts)
  • Close races where our support could impact results

Candidate Alignment with our Values

1 - Somewhat aligns

2 - Aligns

Alignments (and explanations)

Values

10 of 20

Congressional District 49:

Mike Levin

Diane Harkey

Health Care

2 (Supports HR676 Medicare for All with immediate repair of the ACA in the interim. Didn’t state healthcare is a human right but inferred it.)

0 - Does not support single payer.

Environment

2 (His campaign has a strong emphasis on environmental protection. He worked in this area. Locally he worked on removing nuclear waste from the coast at the San Onofre nuclear power plant.)

0 - Not convinced that humans are causing climate change; thinks that we should just "go a little slower" and not make drastic changes.

Immigration

2 (Strong support for DREAMERs and immigrants. Supports non-discriminatory policies with emphasis on LGBTQ fairness.)

0 - Has a problem with CA resisting Trump's border policies. Isn't against the idea of building the border wall.

Women

2 (Endorsed by NOW. Campaign addressed protections including LGBTQ. Did not address electing more women.)

Elections

0 - Alleged Ponzi scheme defrauding investors and funding her campaign. As a solution to corrupt legislators, suggested an 8pm curfew and the buddy system...?

Economic Justice

2 (Endorsed by Human Rights Campaign. Promised regular town halls and direct engagement with constituents. Addressed most points on his campaign web site. No mention of affordable housing.)

0 - Endorsed by Trump; has praised his tax reform.

11 of 20

Congressional District 50:

Ammar Campa-Najjar

Duncan Hunter

Health Care

2 (Opposes defunding the ACA, but believes it still falls short of the mark of universal coverage and costs to much for many. "That's why Congress must move toward Medicare for all."

0 - Supported repealing the ACA. Anti universal coverage.

Environment

2 ("Transition to 100% renewable energy - that includes generating, storing & transmitting")

0 - History of no votes on renewable energy and conservation, yes votes on more drilling, etc.

Immigration

2 ("Fix our broken immigration system")

0 - Focus on building walls and strengthening border security. Has implied that his opponent is a "radical muslim".

Women

2 ("Ensure equal pay for women, healthcare, and protection from harassment in workplace.")

0 - Anti affirmative action and other measures that would increase participation of women & minorities. Lots of anti-LGBTQ+ votes.

Elections

2 (Not accepting corporate donations. Supports banning corporate money from elections.)

0 - Supports photo ID for voting, anti-campaign finance reform, pretty typical conservative stance to election issues. Most recently, indicted for misusing campaign funds.

Economic Justice

2 ("We need to end the most burdenson and expensive welfare program in the US: Corporate welfare." Wants to invest in jobs training, infrastructure, & fair trade.

0 - Pro vouchers in schools. Pro prosecution & sentencing. Pro death penalty. Pro corporations. Anti criminal justice reform.

12 of 20

San Diego City Council District 2:

Dr. Jen Campbell

Lorie Zapf

Health Care

2 (Many of her stated positions are related to homelessness, but her focus is on preventative and evidence-based measures. Hopefully her career as a doctor has also given her some insight.)

Environment

2 (Supports CAP and progressive solutions. Endorsed by the Sierra Club.)

1 (beach and river cleanup, voted for Climate Action Plan because goals were made flexible, SEQA reform, wants to use public money to subsidize ride-share rather than focus on public transit, undecided on CCA, questions about whether she believes in climate change)

Immigration

0 (Voted against joining other CA cities that were in favor of CA sanctuary state law, voted against Gomez‘s anti-Trump wall resolution)

Women

Elections

2 (Inclusion of residents' voices in city government is a top priority)

Economic Justice

2 (Housing first model. Increase housing supply for middle and lower classes)

2 (rethink housing, mandating mental healthcare for those affected homeless)

13 of 20

San Diego City Council District 4:

Monica Montgomery

Myrtle Cole

Health Care

Environment

2 (supports CAP and CCAs; wants to “marry” economic justice and environmental causes)

1 (incoherent policy goals; ambivalent about CCAs especially if it increases cost for her constituents; seems to be in favor of public transit but again has incoherent policy goals)

Immigration

Women

2 (Endorsed by Democratic Woman’s Club and Run Women Run)

1 - First woman to serve in this position, and first African American woman to serve as Council president. Endorsed by Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest. However, no evidence that this issue is a priority for her nor any accomplishments related to equal pay or improved reporting of harassment.

Elections

2 (supports district-only election for school district votes; this is being proposed by Republicans on the Council because she supports community representation)

1 (Unclear position on district-only vs city wide elections for school board)

Economic Justice

2 (Criminal justice reform; Balanced growth including development not just affordable housing.)

1 (Focus on social equity but more focused on deregulation. Supports more affordable housing, but not committed to rent control or rent stabilization efforts.)

14 of 20

San Diego City Council District 6:

Tommy Hough

Chris Cate

Health Care

2 (Mostly inferred - reference to "affordable healthcare with reproductive health options like Planned Parenthood" being critical, via site position statement.)

Environment

2 (Strong professed support, multiple locations. Commitment to move toward and meet SD Climate Action Plan goals on time for "cleaner air, greener parks, and zero waste." Sierra Club endorsement.

Immigration

2 (Inferred from statements like "San Diego must continue its efforts... to identify and end human trafficking" and positions on other issues.)

Women

2 (Pay inequity is explicitly mentioned. Support expressed for Planned Parenthood, other women's health access.)

Elections

1 Used his greater funding to purchase "ad" rights to opponent's name, ensuring the incumbents' website displays first in a search. He did support more representative elections via the Reform Our School Board measure.

Economic Justice

2 (Strong proponent with repeated statements regarding housing affordability and accessibility. Has some expressed ideas; may lack experience in current state/actual options.)

1 Has supported a variety of "band aid" solutions to homelessness (safe parking lots for families to park in when sleeping in their cars, storage facilities, etc.) but no specific policies that seem to address deeper issues

2 Work with City to impliment climate action plan. Acknowledges climate change

Immigration

2 Worked with Deported Vets; has terrific campaign ads saying Trump's policies are inhumane

0 - No mention of the issue from her campaign - has indicated it is not a priority (Apr. 2018 SD Union Tribune Interview)

Women

2 -100% rated with Planned Parenthood.

1 Mentions wage disparacgies as part of her working Families Plan. Good Track Record at DA's office in hiring women; bad with macho culture

1 Has bad track record with campaign donations; primary campaign this year involved lots of dark money.

Economic Justice
