THe Six Steps of the design thinking process

  1. Framing a question — (empathy)Identify a driving question that inspires others to search for creative solutions.
  2. Gathering inspiration — (empathy)Inspire new thinking by discovering what people really need.
  3. Generating ideas — (Ideation)Push past obvious solutions to get to breakthrough ideas.
  4. Making ideas tangible — (experimentation)Build rough prototypes to learn how to make ideas better.
  5. Testing to learn (experimentation)Refine ideas by gathering feedback and experimenting forward.
  6. Sharing the story — Craft a human story to inspire others toward action

  1. Framing a Question - Example of using Padlet

  1. How might we improve __________?
  2. Padlet

II. Gathering Inspiration

  • Google Slides + Search
  • Observation, interviewing, learning from extremes, hacks
  • YouTube
  • Padlet

Tips for Gathering Inspiration

During this phase, students need to get out of the classroom and talk to people and observe habits and behaviors to get insights about what problems they are interested in solving. They may use some of the below strategies:

  • Observation: Students observe what people say, do, and what deeply matters to them using empathy.
  • Learning from Extremes: Students can learn from hacks or workarounds they observe to stretch thinking, and help them see beyond assumptions to generate bold new ideas.
  • Interviewing: Students speak to others to develop empathy for the people they’re creating for.
  • Gathering Insights Clip

Photo of Imaginary Person You are Designing for

14 of 42

Name: James Wellington

Age: 34

Job or School Interests: High school Engineering teacher for Santiago High School

Why does he/she need your product: He needs this product because he has students who complain that the seats are uncomfortable and rusty. They also complain about how they can’t study in his room because they can’t see their textbook clearly. Students come with uncharged phones too which upsets him.

What does he/she need: James needs something affordable for his price. He also wants a table with a portable usb hub so the students can charge their phones during his lesson. He needs an attached light lamp on the table so the students can have light whenever. Another thing he needs is cushions on the chairs in order for students to be comforted. He also needs something modern, not old school chairs and tables. People need backpack hangers attached on the table so it doesn’t have to be under them and make their legs uncomfortable.
