Examples of microaggressions:�

"You're so angry - are you having your period?"

"You speak very good english, to not be from here"

"You're so childish"

"Sometimes I forget that you are a foreigner"

“You should eat a little less/more”

"No, where are you really from?"

"Are you sure you want to wear such a short skirt?"

“That makes you look like a boy”

“You’re such an activist”

  1. Turn to the person next to you and say each of the above to each other.

  • Questions for reflection:
    1. How did you feel when each thing was said/asked?
    2. Did one hit you harder than the other? - Why?
    3. How would it affect you if you heard this every day?
    4. Give one example of microaggression, which is not on the list.

  1. Imagine living in an apartheid system. A system where you are stripped of �the freedom and rights that you have now. How do you think that would affect you?
    • Practically in your everyday life?
    • Emotionally in your heart and mind?
    • Who would you have been in such a society?

  • Apartheid ended in South Africa in the early 90s. Where do you see structural racism �in your society, that impacts the rights of a minority or distinct group? (Give an example)

  • Why do you think racism still exists in your society? �Reflect around Duduzile`s explanation and why diversity is a relevant word.

  • How can you as an individual contribute to remove structural racism?
