Hula Hoop Horshoes

Very similar to regular Horseshoes, Beanbag horseshoes is a 2 player game that uses 2 hula hoops, 2 small rubber rings, and 6 beanbags (3 for each player). First player starts with at least one foot in the hula hoop and underhand tosses 3 beanbags, one at a foot in the hula hoop and underhand tosses 3 beanbags, one at a time, to the other hula hoop. Second player follows with their turn. 1 point – touching the outside of the hula hoop, 2 points – inside hula hoop w/out touching the sides of the hula hoop, 3 points – touching any part of the small rubber ring in the middle.

Half-Pipe Golf

Using PVC half-pipe lengths, students must move a golf ball from one location to another without touching the golf ball (except to start) or allowing the golf ball to touch the ground. One team can work on improving their time and/or efficiency or two teams can compete against one another.

Croquet

Two teams: both start in the same place. Everyone is headed to the same wicket (upside-down U). Teams want to be the first ball through the wicket. First ball through scores a point for their team. Now everybody shoots for the second wicket. First team to score 5 points wins.

Group Juggling

Group of 4 or more gets in a circle. Hand one of the students a ball. Have all the other students raise one hand (this signifies “I have not received the ball yet”). Now the student with the ball will begin to “set the pattern” by throwing the ball to someone across the circle from them. Having received the ball, this 2nd student will lower his/her hand. This 2nd student will now pass to someone else who has not received the ball across the circle from them. This will continue until all students have received the ball and the last student passes it back to the 1st student. At this point no one should have their hand up. Now that the pattern is set, have the group repeat the pattern as fast as they can without dropping. Once they can pass one ball well, introduce a 2nd ball, then a 3rd, and so on. If at any point the group drops the ball twice, take one ball away. Have them move on as you see fit.

Bean Bag Addition

Bean Bag Addition (PreK-2)

Students either work individually or in pairs, and throw the bean bags, trying to get the highest score by tossing 4 bags and adding the numbers together. The bag must land in the circle for it to count. If it doesn't land completely in a circle, it counts as zero. Opponents can check the math of their challenger.

Use blocks to build a wall, stack them as tall as you can, see how many you can hold supported between 2 team members, etc.

Soccer Multiples

Soccer Multiples (3-5)

Students draw a card with a number on it, then have to dribble the soccer ball to each of its multiples in order. Numbers will be written on the ground. Example: If they draw the number 3, they need to dribble the ball to 3, then 6, then 9, etc.

Have student place 1 foot in a hula hoop and lay part of the hula hoop across the laces of that foot with the rest of the hula hoop behind the student. Either by swinging the foot in the hula hoop or kick-starting it with the opposite foot, get the hula hoop spinning around the ankle. As the hula hoop spins around one foot the student lifts the other foot to allow the hula hoop to pass underneath. Continue this motion for as long possible, creating a sort of hula hoop skip.

As many students can play this together as space and supply of flags allow. Each student walks into the playing area and tucks 2 flags into opposite hip sections of their pants/shorts with the great majority of the flag remaining visible. No tying flags or holding flags with hands. If wearing a long t-shirt, please have student tuck it in first and then tuck in flag. Once everyone is set with their flags, adult will signal the start of the game. All students must hop on one leg and attempt to remove all other students’ flags. If a student’s flag is removed or if they put the foot down they’ve been holding up, then they must step off to the side of the playing area to await the next round. The last person hopping with a flag is the winner of that round.

There are 3 hockey nets set up along the fence. Have 1 person line up in front of a net and take a shot at the goal. If there are more than 3 people, have them start lining up behind the first 3 people. NOTE: Remind students to keep hockey stick below waist and wait until everyone has shot before retrieving puck. Create safety zone around shooter so people behind them don’t get hit with stick.

Hockey

Keep-Away

We usually play team keep-away in a 3 vs. 3 setting. Give 3 people jerseys, they will always start with the ball if there is a break in the action. While staying in the defined play area, jerseys will start off by passing the ball from teammate to teammate without the ball hitting the ground or being intercepted by the other team. If the ball hits the ground or is intercepted by the other team, the jerseys put the ball on the ground and move away while the other team picks up the ball and takes on the role of offense. Jerseys take on the role of defense. Players may not touch one another. Players must not move with ball other than pivoting on one foot. If a player steps out of bounds while in possession of the ball, that player must put the ball on the ground for the other team to pick up.

Baseball Swing

Teachers Squirt Students

The children will hide and duck in and around playground structures, avoiding any teachers and adults who have squirt bottles.

  • Time limit is usually around 2 minutes. It is a very popular event and we must keep the line down!!
  • There will be a separate entrance and a separate exit.
  • Watch the water container that is used to fill the squirt bottles as well as the squirt bottles themselves. We have had trouble with the kids (parents/teachers) getting themselves soaked.

Students will take turns batting a ball from the tee into the fence. Each student gets 3 swings. NOTE: Be careful to have a safety zone around batter so no one gets hit with bat. Also let students know we are hitting ball “into” fence, not “over.”

Football Pass

Any 2 people can race. We use 3 commands:

1) “Runners, to your marks.” (They put their foot/feet behind the line.)

2) “Get set.” (They hunker down, bending knees, ready to run)

3) “Go” (They start running!)

4) If someone jumps before the signal, it is a “false start”. Both come back and start again.

Getting ready for the next race: Runners who have finished the race be sure to come back on the sides of the race. Do not come back by way of the running lanes.

16

15

Two students can throw and catch the football. Please make sure they throw in a parallel direction to the neighboring "Dash" event.

Frisbee Pass

Keva E-STEAM

Students compete against one another to see who can build the tallest tower in two minutes using Keva planks that also withstands 3 blasts of air from the the Air Blaster. Students will have 100 planks each. Volunteer handles the air blaster. Students should not use the air blaster. Volunteer can measure the tower and keep a running list of students who have success.

Note: This should be done on separate tables or on a flat surface on the ground as if competitors are sharing a table, they can knock over someone else's tower by bumping the table. Maybe a student desk for each building station?

Tetherball

Take off shoes and walk slowly on the mat up to the rope.

Reach up as high on the rope as you can. Jump and pull up with the arms.

Pull legs up and place feet on a knot below them.

Pull up with the arms again.

Now use your legs to stand up on the knot.

Repeat this pattern and go as high as you’d like as long as you leave yourself with enough energy to come down safely.

Reverse the process in coming all the way down to the mat. NO DROOPPING, JUMPING OFF from or SLIDING DOWN the rope.

Rope Climb

22

21

Tetherball is a game where 2 opposing players strike a ball (one clockwise, one counterclockwise) attached to a rope on a pole in an attempt to wind the rope all the way around the pole. The court is divided into two sides, one for each player, that should evenly divide the pole in half. You may only strike the ball with your hands or forearms and you may not touch the rope or pole and you may only hold the ball when you are serving. Play until someone wraps the rope all the way around the pole in their direction.

Arcade Basketball

Hula Hoop

Each student gets 10 attempts to make as many baskets as possible.

Students can work on personal best or challenge a classmate.

24

23

Allow students to hula hoop and see how long they can hula hoop without stopping. You can also have students start hula hooping at the same time and see who is the last one hula hooping. Decide on your own when to have them move on. Just keep the crowd down. If someone really wants to work at it and no one is waiting, let them stay!

BeeBots

Climbing Wall

Code the Beebot to trace the lifecycle of a frog, butterfly, or apple!

Students enjoy climbing our Traverse (sideways) Wall!

Rules:

  • Use the four point system in moving…right hand, right foot, left foot, left hand in that order.
  • The same hands cannot be on one rock; 2 feet cannot be on the same rock.
  • No swinging feet while holding onto rocks….problem solve!!!
  • Feet must stay on or below the red rock line at all times.

Challenge: Name one color rock is all they can touch, i.e. green rocks only.

Jump Rope

Four Square

28

“Four Square” is started with a bounce, then hit with the hand only. (Any younger student may serve by throwing it over.) The ball must go over the line without bouncing and may bounce once in the opposite side or another person’s square. Their partner must return the hit without it bouncing a 2nd time. This continues until someone hits the ball out of bounds or lets it bounce more than once in their square. In Four square, the sections are named in order from lowest to highest: Joker, Jack, Queen, King. Students may play until they reach King or they quit.

27

Allow students to jump rope and see how many jumps they can do without stopping. You can also have students start jumping at the same time and see who is the last one jumping. Decide on your own when to have them move on. Just keep the crowd down. If someone really wants to work at it and no one is waiting, let them stay!
