Military Career?
In 1842 he attended the Military Academy of West Point and graduated 17 out of 59 in 1846. He also fought in the Mexican American War; he joined the first U.S. Artillery as second lieutenant serving under General Winfield Scott. After the war, he took a break from the military and was a professor at the Virginia Military Institute. He was known for his artillery tactics among his students. Later as the Civil War broke out he was asked to lead and prepare the VMI Corps of Cadets, his war tactic would be called the “Stonewall Brigade.” He was promoted the roles of brigadier commander and brigadier general under Johnston. July of 1861 Jackson earned his nickname at the First Battle of Bull Run; he applied his tactic, bridging a gap in the defensive line under Union attack helping win the war. In the spring of 1862, he began the Shenandoah Valley Campaign by defending West Virginia from Union force invasion. As the Civil War continued Jackson later combined his army with Lee’s.
