Attendance and participation

  • Mandatory (5% of lecture grade)
  • Use iClicker (starts next week)

  • Allowed 8 absences (do not need to email me)
    • If you have 8 absences, reach out to me

  • Need to answer at least 50% of questions during class 🡪 considered as participated 🡪 receive a point for the day

Grading breakdown

  • Total grade: 75% lecture grade + 25% lab grade
    • If lecture grade is 80% and lab grade is 90% 🡪 grade will be 82.5%
  • Quizzes: 20% of lecture grade
  • In-class exams: 15% of lecture grade each, 45% all three
  • Final exam: 20% of lecture grade
  • Exam reflections: 10% of lecture grade for all three
  • Attendance and participation: 5% of lecture grade

My teaching style

  • Most of the information you need is on the slides
  • During lecture:
    • I will explain the information on the slides
    • There are clicker questions about the topic we covered to check your knowledge
    • There is time for you to ask questions
  • What should you do?
    • highlight/underline important points
    • Add clarifying points
    • Ask questions!
      • “Can you please go over that again?” is a valid question

How to study before/after lecture?

Before/during

  • Read through the chapter or lecture slides, become familiar with terms/general ideas
  • Answer iClicker questions
  • Ask questions

After

  • Review your notes after class
  • Answer review questions
  • Respond to iClicker end of class survey with any clarifying questions you might have

On regular basis/when needed

  • Come to class, office hours, SI sessions, review sessions
    • Submit questions for review sessions
  • Practice active recall (flash cards, teach a friend)
  • Use quizzes to study

Studying/school advice

  • Put exams, quizzes, deadlines in your calendar
  • If lecture slides and resources look off, let me know
  • Readings: skim, don’t worry about reading everything
    • Meant to familiarize you with material, not to know all the content
  • Use textbook online resources (videos, practice quizzes, etc)
  • Look for other resources online (Amoeba Sisters, Khan Academy)
  • Use your time wisely
  • Advocate for yourself
