College admissions changes for this year and the future

SAT Subject Tests - The College Board has discontinued them.

Standardized testing - SAT/ACT

UC was test-free (no SAT or ACT scores considered) in the admissions process for Class of 2021 and will continue to be test-free at least through the Class of 2025

CSU was test-free in the admissions process for the Class of 2021 and will continue to be test-free at least through the Class of 2022.

Most other colleges (private and out-of-state public) were either test-free or test-optional (students could submit scores if they chose).

The standardized testing policy changes allowed students who did not have access to testing sites to submit applications.

The policies also encouraged more students to apply to highly selective colleges that they may have previously considered out of reach.

The test-optional movement has opened doors for many students from traditionally underrepresented groups.

Colleges have focused on a commitment to diversity.

The test-optional and test-free policies led to an increase in selective college applications nationwide. The number of students submitting applications did not increase, but the number of applications per student increased. For selective college admissions, acceptance rates decreased.

UCLA - 29% increase in number of applications this year vs. last year. UC Berkeley: 28% increase. UCSD: 18% increase.

MIT - 66% increase in number of applications this year vs. last year.

Colgate U. (NY) - 104% increase!

Other less selective colleges saw a decrease in the number of applications this year vs. last year. Their admit rates increased.

Harvard’s admit rate this year: 3.4%. Columbia: 3.7% admit rate. Princeton: 4% admit rate. Yale: 4.6% admit rate.

Given these percentages, Class of 2021 did extremely well in the admissions process!

Naviance is a college and career readiness software that partners with schools to provide students with college planning and career assessment tools. Naviance is aligned to a research-backed framework that outlines six essential competencies required for postsecondary success: social emotional learning, interpersonal skills, academic skills, career knowledge, college knowledge, and transition skills. The platform is a comprehensive toolset that helps students assess and develop essential competencies needed to be successful after high school.

The purpose is the support students post-secondary planning through four primary areas:

Self-discovery: Through different assessments and surveys students can learn more about who they are and utilize results to connect their personal interests to career profiles.

Career Exploration: Within the career research tools students can access Roadtrip Nation, a digital career exploration tool that enables students to discover new pathways, interests, and ambitions. The archive includes over 7,000 full-length video interviews conducted by young people, chronicling the diverse personal stories of leaders who have turned their interests into their life’s work.

Success Planning: Success Planner enables each student to have a truly personalized plan of action that provides an effective way for counselors, teachers, and families to monitor and coach students toward achieving their short-term and long-term goals. Schools and districts can customize the college readiness experience by school, grade-level, and group or individual student.

Students can set their own goals and take action on tasks assigned to them by their counselors. Success Planner is a comprehensive tool that truly allows staff to ensure students are engaging with and completing activities that will propel them toward their college related goals.

Post-Secondary Preparation: Through resume building and academic planning students can ensure that they have the skills necessary to help them be successful beyond Arcadia High School.

Granular career information available on over 1,000 specific job roles (i.e. Tellers, Actuaries, Librarians, Middle School Teachers, etc.)

Within the Career Research tools, Naviance provides students with discovery and planning resources to connect interests and strengths to career paths.

Postsecondary success depends on strong work readiness skills and knowledge. Most students need help understanding job expectations and training needs. In Naviance, students have tools and resources to explore their career interests, create a resume of skills and knowledge, and build individual plans toward their career goals.

More research shows that finding the right college improves students persistence in their post-secondary education and increases opportunities for job placement. Through the various college research tools, students will gain important knowledge about the college application process and ensuring that their professional goals align with their choice in college.

Once of the most popular college search tools is the SuperMatch. SuperMatch makes it easy for students to explore their postsecondary options and discover colleges that are a match academically and a fit with the experience they seek. An intuitive search function and onboarding cues ensure students can get started quickly. They can choose to filter their search based on 80 data points, such as retention rate, financial information, student profiles, and test-optional institutions.

Based on their profile and search criteria, students can see an in-depth, side-by-side comparison of higher education institutions and easily pinpoint colleges that are the best fit for them. Results show students exactly how their Fit Score was determined and how they compare to institutional averages.
