Purpose

The purpose of this project is to determine whether the price of nail polish is proportional to its durability.

3 of 10

Hypothesis

If expensive and inexpensive nail polishes are tested for their durability, then the inexpensive nail polishes will last the longest.

4 of 10

Materials

  • 3 inexpensive nail polishes (LA Colors, WetnWild, Sinful Colors)
  • 3 expensive nail polishes (Ciate London, OPI Nail Laquer, Trust Fund Beauty)
  • 3 middle-priced nail polishes (Sally Hansen Tough as Nails X-treme Wear, More than Magic, Sally Hansen Color Therapy) to be control
  • 1 Camera
  • 12 Printouts to record results
  • 4 test subjects

5 of 10

Procedure

  • Paint each nail a different color. Each color’s location should be randomized on each test subject to account for the varied use of each hand and finger.
  • Every 3 days for 11 days, record the status of each fingernail’s chipping, fading and wearing on one of the printouts.
  • Photograph each nail’s chipping, fading and wearing.
  • Repeat for each of the 4 test subjects and record results.

Conclusions

From observing the data and graphs, there was no clear difference between prices, as all polishes chipped within a day of each other on average. Each price range had one brand that stood out as more durable: Sinful Colors, Trust Fund Beauty, and the Sally Hansens. This proves that quality can be determined only by observing individual performance, not price. The hypothesis that the inexpensive nail polish brands would prove more durable was rejected, as there was no true winner.

Real-World Connections

Did you know that the average professional manicure in America costs about $20 and only lasts 1-2 weeks? If you round up to 2 weeks, that would be $480.00 yearly. $4.00 worth of Sinful Colors nail polish will give you the same thing. That’s $476.00 saved for using inexpensive nail polish and painting your nails yourself. In perspective, that’s enough for 4 one-day Disney Park tickets with 36.00 left over!
