It can also involve avoiding the use of non-food related animal products, like leather.

A vegan is someone who practices veganism.

Why Veganuary?

  • Plant-based eating is good for the environment and other animals:
    • Animal agriculture leads to deforestation; the emission of greenhouse gases (14-18% of human created emissions); and large amounts of fresh water use (8% of global human water use).
    • Farmed animals are often mistreated, separated from their young and live in cramped, unsanitary conditions.
  • If you eat a range of nuts, legumes and vegetables, plant-based eating is good for your health:
    • It reduces the risk of heart disease and can increase your energy levels.
  • Plant-based food is often cheaper, especially if you are cooking from scratch.
  • It can be an interesting challenge to try out something new and learn to cook new recipes.
