The Spring NJSLA & DLM Assessments measure a student’s attainment of key skills and knowledge as compared to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for the particular content area and grade level being assessed.

The State examines a district’s student average scale score and growth proficiency when measuring their overall performance in English Language Arts, Math & Science.

OVERVIEW OF OVERVIEW

NJSLA-Science results are a sign of consistent student achievement and growth in

Grade 5 & 8.

Results inform classroom instruction.

Assessment is cumulative and measures student proficiency with the NJSLS-Science.

Areas of Assessment include Earth and Science, Life Science, and Physical Science.

Test Items require students to investigate, critique and make sense of phenomenon.

Intervention Strategies for NJSLA/DLM

Data Analysis and Subsequent Actions using the NJSLA Evidence Statement Analysis Report:

  • Audited Elementary Science and High School Science, Algebra I and Geometry curricula; realigned curriculum scope & sequence accordingly

  • Extended the benchmark system through Grade 12 using a Multiple Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

  • Developed an Interventionist Role in core Mathematics & English Courses at PLHS

Intervention Strategies for NJSLA/DLM

Planned Interventions for the 2025-2026 School Year in Response to Data Analysis:

  • PLHS: Assign “Intervention Period” during lunch to students identified in need of learning acceleration in Mathematics or English.

  • Target Executive Function Support for Spec Ed students (e.g. organization and time management) & Embed NJSLA/DLM practice in Academic Support classes.

  • Assign 15 hours of professional learning in Sheltered English Instruction (SEI) to all science and social studies teachers with multilingual learners (ML). The SEI model provides teachers with evidence-based strategies for making content comprehensible for ML students.

  • Assign ML students to an extended day intervention period supplemented with Title III funding.

What’s New for 2025-2026?

  • NJSLA/NJGPA-Adaptive: The State is maintaining the same tested areas while transitioning to a computer-adaptive testing platform for ELA and Mathematics.

  • A computer-adaptive test (CAT) is an assessment tool that determines future questions based on a student’s responses to prior questions. (NJDOE, August 2025)
    • Lessens testing anxiety by presenting students with questions closer to their current level of knowledge and skills; and,

    • Measures each student’s knowledge with greater precision because items are closer to their current level; plus, a CAT,

    • Differentiates a student’s assessment pathway similarly to more familiar district-initiated testing platforms: IXL, iReady, Amplify Boost.
