OVERVIEW OF

THE ORGANIZATION

The name Professional Dimensions is representative of our belief about the beautiful complexity of the woman archetype we aspire too and the way we choose to show up in our work together - as professionals, always. At its inception, the group was intentionally inclusive of a variety of women, and saw value in the depth and myriad of identities that made each member unique. Our dimensions, an amalgamation of everything we’ve lived, experienced, created, survived, etc. make us who we are as individuals, and who we are as threads in the larger tapestry that is Professional Dimensions. And, we’d posit that it is the understanding and maximizing of these dimensions that gives us power. Our dimensions are the identities we carry and PD believes that all of these identities deserve to be acknowledged and nourished. We believe that the better we understand our dimensions, the better we can leverage them in our collective pursuit of better.

This also impacts the way we define Professional.

We selected and maintained “Professional” in our name for two important reasons:

1. To cement our belief in how we should treat each other. We want a culture of professionalism where we are treating every member with dignity, respect and love.

And 2. we are also putting a stake in the ground about our belief that a professional woman is multi-dimensional. And, that the while the word professional has been used to hold women back, the definition of professional/ professionalism needs to be expanded.

It IS professional to advocate for yourself as a woman, to prioritize the agenda of women peers, to allow emotion to guide decision making, to show up with clothing and hair that affirms your culture, to connect with a prospective mentor to discuss business AND personal balance. These are all professional BECAUSE these dimensions of women must be considered. As we work to grow this understanding in our work and home lives, PD will always be a space where a woman is embraced as a professional and elevated because of, not in spite of, her professional dimensions.

HISTORY

In the summer of 1978, three Milwaukee women professionals spent their time organizing a club that would help other professional women. At that time, the group of about 30 would meet up twice a month to have dinner, hear from speakers, make new friends and share their ideas and experiences with each other. They created a dues structure and would form an infrastructure that gave them power. It’s where organizing and power building meet education and women advocacy. It's very “for us by us,” which is empowering and, in our opinion, the best way to move systems forward. There's so much to learn from our foremothers.

“Three Milwaukee Women who hold professional jobs spent most of last summer organizing a club to help other professional women. The result is Professional Dimensions, a group of 30 professional women who meet twice a month to have dinner, hear a speaker, make new friends and - perhaps most important - to exchange ideas and experiences.

The three are Barbara Stansberry, assistant director, Policy Owners Services of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co.; Susan Scott, sales associate for Heritage Associates Inc., a real estate firm; and Penny Sue Scheuerman, project business manager of Junior Achievement of Southeastern Wisconsin Inc.

Ms. Scheuerman is the president of Professional Dimensions; Ms. Stansberry vice president, and Mrs. Scott, treasurer. Jeanne Rowbottom, vice president of customer service at Olsten Temporary Services, is the secretary.

Began at Luncheons

It all began when Ms. Scheuerman and Ms. Stansberry met for luncheon to discuss recruiting people from the business community to work with Junior Achievement. “I mentioned that in my company there was a network of communication among the men,” Ms. Stansberry said in an interview. “They have a group called the Sportsmen’s Club”. Through the club, a new male employee gets to know all the other men within a few days. But there aren’t many opportunities for women to do the same thing.

Ms. Scheuerman and Mrs. Scott knew each other through their jobs and, coincidentally, they had talked about the same thing.

The three women were well aware of other women’s groups, including Tempo, the Business and Professional Women and specialized groups made up of accountants, lawyers or other professionals. “But we felt we wanted to form our own,” Ms. Scheuerman said, “so that we would have control of our money and the thrust of the organization as we saw it.” They decided to give it a try.

Spread the word

They began by calling friends and business acquaintances to see if they were interested in joining such a group and if they knew any other women who might be interested. Membership is by invitation; dues are $30 a year.

Next came the tedious job of writing the bylaws. With that accomplished, they held a series of five luncheons “to tell the story of the group and, hopefully, to stimulate some interest.” Ms. Stansberry went on.

They found 30 members, “but we’re still recruiting,” she said. They are hoping that eventually they will have 150 members. That’s the current membership of Tempo, a business women’s club formed about three years ago.

Why didn’t they simply join it? “Tempo has declared a moratorium on new members,” Ms. Stansberry answered. “The Tempo folks were most helpful. They shared time with us at the outset, pointing out some of the pitfalls.”

Unlime Tempo, the three women also wanted to have dinner meetings so there would be more time for a speaker, discussion and short seminars on such subjects as stress and time management. Tempo meets at luncheons.

Founded in 1978, Professional Dimensions is a leading women’s professional association in the Milwaukee area whose mission is to unite women leaders in the relentless pursuit of better.

As an association we create opportunities for members to network, collaborate, learn and lead while inspiring women to reach for more in all aspects of their lives. The organization is intentionally inclusive across career experiences and personal identities, maximizing its ability to innovate and elevate the community it serves. Professional Dimensions challenges leaders to blaze trails in their companies and communities. Our driving ambition is to expand what is possible for women and the world they influence.

Professional Dimensions is inclusive of business, non-profit, academic, government and entrepreneurial leaders, representing over 300 companies in more than 30 industries. 30% of its members are women of color and 40% of our board seats are held by women of color. The membership body spans four generations, from Millennials to The Silent Generation.
