Space education is interdisciplinary

Engage in and promote the effective use of STEM investigations and integration of NASA-developed resources with equitable teaching strategies.

Replicate these activities (virtually or in-person) through an inclusive, accessible, and equitable lens.

  • We selected a couple activities that are great for remote or hybrid learning!

Become confident in the NASA opportunities that exist for North Dakota teachers

Ask questions anytime!

Use the chat feature, unmute yourself, or use the “raise hand” feature within the participants button.

The goals for today:

What is Citizen Science?

Opportunity for your students to help out scientists!

  • Students have power!
  • Citizen support to gather data - much more than the researchers could do on their own!
  • Can do remotely or in the classroom

Some examples:

Biology, birding

  • eBird (app for world’s largest biodiversity project)
  • Great Backyard Bird Count (migrations)
  • Christmas Day Bird count (real-time snapshot)
  • Hummingbirds at Home (Audubon)

Astronomy

  • CosmoQuest (mapping solar system objects)
  • Logbook Transcription Project (transcribe Smithsonian's work from female computers/astronomers!)
  • GLOBE (since 2016)

NASA citizen science has come to dominate multiple fields of science. Our 1.5 million+ citizen scientists have discovered:

  • Most of the known comets.
  • Most of the ultracool brown dwarfs.
  • Most of the long period exoplanets.
  • Every known sample of interstellar dust.
