Nasal and non-nasal vowels

Vowels can be nasal (like [am/em] and [an/an] or non-nasal [like [e] and [a].

When you say a nasal vowel, air passes through your nose as well as your mouth.

However, [em/am] and [en/an] sound different before a vowel.
