The U.S. Department of Education’s recent 'Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning' noted that:

'Students in online conditions performed modestly better, on average than those learning the same material through traditional face-to-face instruction” (p. xiv) and, notably, instruction combining online and face-to-face elements had a larger advantage relative to purely face-to-face instruction than did purely online instruction.'

The online tools available in blended courses can also significantly enhance student engagement, ensuring that all students participate in course discussions and benefit from collaborative learning.

LEARNING MODELS

The brick-and-mortar or face-to-face driver model Traditional classroom instruction and activities are the main focus with technology only brought in as a supplementary resource.

The online learning or online driver model This relies heavily on technology and sometimes does not include any in-person instruction with teachers working as facilitators.

In two or three columns

Model 1: The flex model

Although in this model instruction is done primarily online, the significant majority of learning takes place in the classroom. Teachers are available to enrich students’ online learning experience and provide face-to-face support to individual students, as and when required.

Model 2: The self-blend or à la carte model Students complete some courses in a face-to-face environment at a brick-and-mortar campus and other courses online. These online courses may be completed either on-campus or away from campus, so there is some flexibility.

Model 3: The enriched virtual model Instruction generally takes place in a traditional classroom setting but students have the choice of where, when, and sometimes how, to complete the remaining activities.

Model 4: The rotation model

Individual Rotation

Flipped Learning

Lab Rotation

Station Rotation

All students rotate through stations in their classroom on a fixed schedule.

One of the stations is in a computer lab, so is away from their classroom.

Online learning replaces homework and most instruction is delivered online.

Students have individual rotations, so may not visit all stations.

  • Three major steps of planning identified by McTighe and Wiggins are: Step 1 – Identify the desired results These are the learning goals and essential understandings that mostly come from the national or program standards. Step 2 - Identify assessment evidence In other words, a well-designed summative task with specific criteria and mark schemes that are aligned with step 1. Step 3 - Plan learning experiences and instruction This is the fun part and involves figuring out classroom activity, sequencing, and resources to help support our students strive towards the learning goals.

Perform better than their peers in fully online or face-to-face courses

Provides opportunities for students to be involved in decision-making and problem-solving.

Students can learn using their preferred method which increases confidence and satisfaction.
