INVESTIGATION

An INVESTIGATION is the act of exploring or analyzing someone or something in a formal or systematic way. Get ready to inquire, study, and consider! Each photo entry should be accompanied by a brief essay, a poem, or expanded caption. Writing should help connect the image to the theme of INVESTIGATION -- your words are important to create context to the theme and the photograph for the judges. Good luck and happy photographing!

These words and pictures move on the wall. Are they alive? No. But then again, they must be because each of them represent something. Some stand out more than the others. Plus, in order to function, energy needs to travels through the insides. These signs can choose to be big and bright while others go unnoticed. They’re just like us.

California is filled with children who wonder about the diversity of cultures this state has for them. We search all around to experience the culture without even leaving the city. We take granted of what we have to see, hear, and taste around the world without leaving the state. While the adventures begin and continue, we find more about our ancestors and each other's history and background. Because of this, we have the respect of diversity of one another.

Hell. They all say it’s bad. Yet no one has ever been there to say so. They all just make the assumption, “It’s just a door. How bad can it be?” There’s more to it than hearing people say “what the hell.”See for yourself.

Once one catches a glimpse of something never seen before, it is impossible to erase the memory out of their head. Some choose to not bring it up ever again, while others become consumed by it. They dig deeper, in search of what they once saw. The light through the cracks draw everyone, but only some go closer…

A simple diamond frame. Something is on the other side but you can’t figure out what.

Maybe there is nothing on the other side.

What would be on the other side?

What are we doing on this side.

Are we supposed to be on the other side.

What could be there?

Many questions rise when looking at a simple diamond frame.

I’ve always wondered how something very small outside can be so big on the inside. It just doesn’t make sense. To investigate is to inquire about a subject in detail. To investigate is to travel, learn and study about something unheard or unseen. To investigate is to want to know, and when you want to know you are curious. And being curious is what got most scientists to where they are now. Because when you have an idea of what you want to be or do, you learn more about it. Don’t be afraid to investigate.

There are millions of windows in LA and we will always wonder what’s behind them. There could be a whole nother world behind that piece of glass, but we would never know for sure. LA is full of wonders that we will never fully understand, which is what makes the city so enticing. The smallest things, like investigating what’s behind a window, is what everyday life here is about. LA will continue to be noisy and loud, and mysterious and beautiful, and we will never stop investigating.

“What it Would Be Like”

I wonder what it would be like to soar above my city and see every wonder from above. I wonder what it would be like to be tiny and admire every crevice within architecture. I wonder what it would be like to search, explore, and investigate everything I can. I wonder what it would be like to accomplish my goals. Well I’ll find out tomorrow because everything I wanna do can happen with some work and that’s what it took to design and build the beautiful buildings in my picture.

Perspectives aren’t always perfect, and could be heavily obstructed. The ideal that stays alive is that you must change and adapt to the exterior to properly investigate. Change doesn’t diminish the intended sight, but rather expands it-giving one the opportunity to investigate. And this statement couldn’t be any truer than in Downtown Los Angeles.

The Bradbury Building. I had never heard of this building before my class’ walking field trip around Los Angeles. It is important to investigate your surroundings because you can find beautiful meanings within something that many tend to overlook. An elevator in the midst of travel is a beautiful sight; the colors smudging and blurring behind a door that will soon open to a completely new surrounding. It’s like the beginning of the end. The start of a new endeavor, but not quite. It’s stuck in between, never fully opening itself up. All of this thought comes out of investigating something so new and foreign to me, but a staple in my home city: the Bradbury Building.

I never walk the streets of LA on my own, or for fun, but one day at school we all walked together. I have never realized how much you can see by just walking. This photo reminds me of LA because although it looks so simple and “perfect” there is so much more to it. The main focus is the sunlight hitting the flower, but without the green bush, the street, trees and cars it wouldn’t be as interesting to look at. A photo is more than just its parts, and same goes for a city. After walking around downtown with my classmates I realized that LA is more than just its movie stars, skyscrapers, palm trees, warm weather, and traffic. It's a place filled with culture, creativity, and diversity.

This picture represents people. You won’t know who they are until you look closely, investigate, and talk to them. There are many arts on walls like this in LA. We just get distracted with other things and don’t notice many artworks on the walls of LA. Even when we see it, we just take a glimpse of it and don’t really walk up to find out more. We don’t take second looks of the art because we don’t think much of it. In the real world, we see people walking around all the time and we wouldn’t think much of it. We see homeless people all the time and we think that they are just lazy. Some of them fought for our country and we wouldn’t know because we won’t think twice of it.

What could possibly be lurking within this environment? Fish swimming in the water, birds hiding in the trees, bugs crawling in the foliage, the possibilities are endless. Everything seems to be hidden and calm. However, nowadays we don’t really respect the life that is held in specific environments as technology advances. Will we start preserving the wildlife or keep on tearing down their homes? Investigate.

As we see where the path leads, you don’t pay attention to the sides.

The left shows (some) people’s thinking of what is in other countries: nothing

The right shows what they think of us; with nothing to defend ourselves with, vulnerable to the touch

The middle is the wall that is separating us

The middle building that connects shows that no matter what people say, we are united in some way, and we all need to be respected.

Sometimes, little things in our world remind us of the problems in our world. We just need to investigate.

“Over the Lanterns”

As the leaves are blown off the branches and the wind travels in different directions, the lanterns remain as still as the light. The lanterns represent a path that can lead to an unknown destination. They are attached onto one string that holds them together, like a community of people who have different paths in life, but remain as a working together to create a future.

Does anyone ever look at nature? Like really look. Does anyone ever pay attention to the animals or the plants? Take a look. Take a close look at nature because you’ll see just how beautiful it is. And maybe you’ll find something you’ve never seen.

If you had just taken a few more seconds to stop and look around, you would have realized that there are so many interesting things surrounding you.

Observe and learn, you never know what’s happening on the other side of the same story you’re living.

Seeing things through a different lens

If for only a moment, everyone in the world would a take a step back and investigate their surroundings differently than how they always do. Oh how different the world would be. We would be seeing things we never had seen before, just by investigating and exploring with a different mindset, vision, and perspective. Even looking through a pair of sunglasses differently can completely change your view and perspective on what you were investigating.

Why is everyone so focused on technology? Why can’t it be like the old time? Why can’t we just focus on the people, our city, the art and school. Why does technology have to be a huge part in our lives and society today.

If everyone stopped what they were doing and look out into the world they’d see a wonderful place with wonderful people. Everyone in the world always is concerned with themselves and with their heartaches. Instead of obsessing over themselves they should investigate the other people and places around them. Think about what their going through because there’s always someone who has it worse that you. Once you’ve opened your eyes you should appreciate what you have and the great people in your life.

It doesn’t matter what situation you’re in. As long as you investigate your surroundings and what’s going on you’ll be fine. You’ll reach the end of that journey and notice how much easier life begins to be. All you have to do is get out of the dark and reach the light. It may be difficult, but if you investigate you’ll reach the end eventually.

Sometimes even an instant, a mere fragment of time, holds more than an hour ever could. I was lucky to capture this moment, less than a second before my cat pounced on to my camera. Sometimes, when investigating, it’s important to keep track of who might be investigating you.

No matter how anything looks whether it’s man-made or natural.

No matter what one side looks, dead or lively with colors, in the end both will be better than when they started out.

If only we could all take a bit of time and investigate our world.

There is a time in every child’s life where he or she seeks adulthood. During that time, the child will seem confused and stressed, lonely and depressed. They will try and try and try but never seem to fit. But there will come a time of exploring and finding their true self, only to realize they are sinking.

Do you ever notice how beautiful our world is? If people would just take that second to look up and look at the world, they would see how beautiful it is. All the artwork that people take their time to make. I feel like they’re underrated. Investigate your world and really look at all the artwork. You never know what you’ll notice.

When everyone is always moving so quickly, going from one thing to the next, it’s good to look back and see what everyone is missing. As someone would briskly walk the sidewalk and not see that there is beauty in even that, the sidewalk, road, street signs, traffic lights, all of it. Sometimes you just need to investigate what’s right in front of you.

But they are also very unpredictable once you’re on one level you want to hop on the next but don’t know what to expect. So might I suggest you take your time observe the building and or person before hopping on that next level, for what you may find may be very unpleasant.

Maybe the generations leading to the evolution of beings that could fly had to freefall for a while before they could learn how to fly. If they hadn’t had the drive, curiosity and bravery to investigate and make the discovery by taking such a big risk, they wouldn’t have evolved into such majestic beings. Throughout the history of humanity, we’ve experimented and discovered things going by the rule that the biggest risk you can ever take in life is not taking any.
