IntroductionThe benefits of ventilation include its capacity to remove stale or contaminated air, supply fresh air continuously, and control humidity and temperature. One kind of passive solar heating and cooling device that can be used to control a building's temperature and provide ventilation is a solar chimney. Solar chimneys, like Trombe walls or solar walls, are a means to design buildings with reduced energy use.

Definition of solar chimney

  • A solar chimney is a renewable energy system that uses sunlight and wind to improve natural ventilation in a building. It is among the most illustrative examples of a building envelope-attached passive ventilation system with solar assistance. In specific temperature circumstances, it works incredibly well to improve thermal comfort and natural ventilation.

History of solar chimney

  • The solar chimney system was first proposed in the late 1970s by Professor J. Schlaich and tested with a prototype model in the early 1980s
  • These kinds of architecture are mainly found in the Persian and Roman cities

Types of solar chimneys

  • Typical solar chimneys used in building

Category 1 is the Trombe wall which includes (a), (b), and (c).

  • Category 2 is the roof solar chimney shown in (d) and (e).

Category 3 is the combined solar chimney represented by (f).

It is useful ?

  • Scalability: Solar chimneys can be scaled up or down to suit different energy needs and site conditions, making them suitable for both small-scale and large-scale applications.
  • Local Economic Benefits: Implementing solar chimney projects can create local job opportunities, particularly in construction, maintenance, and operation
  • Resilience: Solar chimneys can operate autonomously and are not dependent on external energy sources
