A Parent’s Guide to

Google Classroom

This presentation shows parents:

    • how students log into Google Classroom
    • how students join a class on Google Classroom
    • how students complete work using Google Classroom
    • how to support your students as they work in Google Classroom

Please make sure to use your child’s PUSD email address

to log into Google Classroom.

Parents will not be able to see their child’s assignments

using a parent email address.

Google Classroom is intended for students to communicate with their teacher and peers concerning their classwork.

Parents should not use Google Classroom to contact teachers or other students. If parents need help contacting their child’s teacher, see slide 18.

Logging in to Google Classroom

Find google classroom by typing google.classroom.com into the address bar at the top

If your child is already logged into their PUSD Google account:

  • click on the tiles in the upper right hand corner
  • then click on the Classroom icon

Joining a class

After logging in:

  • click on the “+” in the top right hand corner.
  • Two options will appear: join class or create class.
  • Select “join class”.

Class Code

Once you click the join button:

  • A box will pop-up asking you to enter the class code.
  • Your child’s teacher must provide the class code.
  • If you do not have a class code, contact your child’s teacher (see slide 18 if you need help contacting your child’s teacher).

Translating Google Classroom into Spanish

To translate a page into Spanish:

  • Right click anywhere on the screen.
  • A menu box will appear, click on the translate to button.
  • Click the three dots on the right hand side of that box, and it will list different languages to choose.
  • Select which language you would like to translate to.

  • Once your child enters the class code, the screen changes to that class.

  • They will not enter the class code again in the future. In this menu, they have access to all of the classes they have joined.

  • Some students may only have 1 class while other students will have multiple classes.

How to know if students have turned in assignments:

Parents can access their child's Google Classroom:

  • Ask your student to log into Google Classroom
    • Select Classwork Tab
    • Select View Your Work
      • All student work will show here (you can use the filters at left, or view all)

  • Note: Student assignments show “turned in” even if they submit a blank assignment without doing any work. Parents can check individual assignments to see if work is complete. (Click on the assignment, and the assignment will show.)

Student Online Safety

  • Parents have the right to look at student’s internet history, communication with teachers, and Google Classroom.

  • Parents have the right to limit the amount of time students spend online, on the computer, and specific websites or apps.

  • Parents have the right to define what times during the day students may use devices. (For example, parents can decide that their children do not use devices after 10pm.)

  • If you have concerns, please contact your student’s teacher. (See Slide 18.)

Contacting Your Student’s Teacher

To contact your student’s teacher, go to the school website.

  • Click the staff directory. The staff directory is under the “About Us/ Our School” tab or the “Parents” tab.
  • In the staff directory, click the staff member’s name you’d like to email, and an email will pop up.
