Theoretical Background

Digital Curation:

The process of creating, managing, and using digital assets to create a digital collection in various areas for present and future use [1].

Personalized Learning:

Tailoring educational experiences to the unique strengths, needs, and interests of each student. This approach empowers students by allowing them the agency to decide what, how, when, and where they learn, ensuring flexibility while upholding the highest academic standards [2].

Research Question

How can Digital Curation be applied to promote Personalized Learning?

Research Context and Participants

  • Science students in secondary schools from different schools and areas in Israel
  • Students created a digital collection on the chosen topic in pairs, groups, or as a whole class

Data Collection

  • Semi-structured interviews (n=25) with selected students
  • Classroom observations (n=10)
  • Analysis of student digital collections (n=12)

Data Analysis

  • The data was analyzed using content analysis

Research Methods

The implementation of personalized learning in the digital curation process

Preliminary Results

Digital Curation for Personalized Learning

Conclusions

Conclusions:

  • Digital Curation generally promotes personalized learning among science students
  • Science teachers who use digital curation as a learning tool promote personalized learning by allowing students to work according to their preferences and focus on their learning process
  • Digital curation empowers students in their learning process by granting them the freedom to choose the materials they learn from, fostering a sense of responsibility and ownership

Our research group focuses on the theory and practice of Biology Education in a rapidly

changing world. Some key directions of our research include the identity, perceptions, experiences, and practices of biology educators.
