Call to Worship -
The Lord is our light and our salvation:
whom then shall we fear?
The Lord is the strength of our lives;
of whom shall we be afraid?
Let us worship God!
Hymn #361 - Blue Hymnal
How Firm a Foundation
Followed by a Prayer of Adoration
Corporate Confession
Loving God, you have formed a covenant with us, committing yourself to us and inviting us to walk with you. Yet we have resisted, preferring to go in different ways, seeking other companions, thinking we know best. Now we find ourselves far from this life, farther still from you. Can you help us find our way back? Have mercy on our waywardness, stir us to accept what you have to offer, gift us with faith so that we can hold the hand you have extended to us in Jesus Christ. Amen.
Silent Reflection
Assurance of Grace
The good news is that at the very moment we discover that the temptations of the world provide no true home for us, we find God sheltering us with love, with grace, with joy.
Gathered up in God's grace, we become forgiven and whole. We can lift glad songs of joy to the One who makes us new. Thanks be to God! Amen.
Gloria Patri (children may come forward)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:
and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Prayer for Illumination
In the Lord I’ll be ever thankful. In the Lord I will rejoice.
Look to God, do not be afraid.
Lift up your voices, the Lord is near. Lift up your voices, the Lord is near.
OT Lesson - Genesis 15:1-21
After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.” But the word of the LORD came to him, “This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir.”
He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descen- dants be.” And he believed the LORD; and the LORD reckoned it to him as righteousness. Then he said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the Chal- deans, to give you this land to pos- sess.” But he said, “O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it?” He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him. Then the LORD said to Abram, “Know this for certain, that your offspring shall be aliens in a land that is not theirs, and shall be slaves there, and they shall be oppressed for four hundred years; but I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve,
and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. As for yourself, you shall go to your ancestors in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. And they shall come back here in the fourth generation; for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.
On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Affirmation of Faith - from A Brief Statement of Faith
We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God’s image, male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. Ignoring God’s commandments, we violate the image of God in others and ourselves, accept lies as truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care. We deserve God’s condemnation.
Yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation. In everlasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all families of the earth. Hearing their cry, God delivered the children of Israel from the house of bondage. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still.
*HYMN I Need Thee Every Hour
I need Thee every hour, Most gracious Lord;
No tender voice like Thine can peace afford.
I need Thee, O I need Thee; Every hour I need Thee!
O bless me now, my Savior – I come to Thee.
*HYMN I Need Thee Every Hour
I need Thee every hour, Stay Thou near by;
Temptations lose their power when Thou art night.
I need Thee, O I need Thee; Every hour I need Thee!
O bless me now, my Savior – I come to Thee.
*HYMN I Need Thee Every Hour
I need Thee every hour, in joy or pain;
Come quickly, and abide, or life is vain.
I need Thee, O I need Thee; Every hour I need Thee!
O bless me now, my Savior – I come to Thee.
*HYMN I Need Thee Every Hour
I need Thee every hour, Teach me Thy will,
And Thy rich promises in me fulfill.
I need Thee, O I need Thee; Every hour I need Thee!
O bless me now, my Savior – I come to Thee.
Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
Offering
“...let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”
Freely you have received, freely give.
Let us return to God the offerings of our life and the gifts of the earth.
Doxology
Amen.
