What is Youth Art Month?

• National Celebration of Art and Art Education Programs for Youth (K-12)
• Started in 1961
• through the Art & Creative Materials, Inc. (ACMI) in cooperation with National Art Education Association (NAEA) and the Council for Art Education (CFAE)
• Emphasizes the value of art education for all children
• Encourages support for quality school art programs
• Promotes material safety
• Provides a forum for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences that are not possible in other curriculum subjects.

Flag program

• Nation-wide, State-lead contest
• Promote Youth Art Month
• Coordinated by Council for Art Education and state leaders (WYAEA)
• Winning design is made into a flag!
• Flag will be on display at the Youth Art Month Museum at the National Art Education Association Convention in March/April.
• Additional prizes available for overall winner and runners-up for each grade group (Elementary, Middle and High School)

Enduring Understanding:

Through art-making, people make meaning by investigating and developing awareness of perceptions, knowledge, and experiences.

Leading Questions:

How do people contribute to awareness and understanding of their lives and the lives of their communities through art-making?

I can brainstorm and develop ideas about how Wyoming connects to the ARTS and myself using perceptions, knowledge and awareness of the environment around me. ��To be able to learn and understand how I, and my state, add to the art world through contribution of lives and communities and their art-making.��I will show that I can do this by documenting my analysis in a mind map of my previous knowledge and new knowledge about my state.��ESSENTIAL QUESTION: � How can students in Wyoming have their voice heard through art?

Flag Requirements

• Mind map documenting how you connect Wyoming to the Arts and “The World Needs Art”
• 3 or more compositional sketches in your sketchbook/on your worksheet
• The word Wyoming must be present on your design
• Designs may be horizontal or vertical
• May additionally include “Youth Art Month”, “YAM”, year, and/or “March 2026” 
• Include this year's theme “The World Needs Art”
• BE CREATIVE AND HAVE FUN!

Pulling it all Together

• Time to combine your skill building and flag design sketch into your final artwork.
• Learn from Past Winners that have a polished work with deep saturation of color, layering, and details…details…and more details.

• Please have your class vote on the top five flag designs for submission. This will narrow down the entries per class. This will also help teachers by opening the opportunity to submit your submissions online to:

Self Grading Day

• Anchor Standard 4: Select, analyze, and interpret artistic work for presentation.
• LT: I can reflect on my artmaking experience and justify why my flag should be come part of the Wyoming Youth Art Month Flag contest based on my ideas, experiences, and skills.
