Purpose, Question, or Problem you want to solve

  • Whenever my parents use our Telsa FSD to driver itself, I wondered how it works and curious to learn about autonomous cars and how they are built. Isn’t it fun when car drive itself and take driver stress out?
  • We decided build our own autonomous car with Lego essential kit. It can be used to carry pasengers from airport long term parking area to airport terminals.

Background Information

  • Automonous cars run by computer with complex software.
  • The complex software decides how to move car safely on the roads.

Materials

  • Lego essential Steam kit (cpu, motors, sensors)
  • Lego bricks
  • Model airplane, and airport signs
  • Paint, popsicle sticks, cardboard, road signs.

Procedures

Autonomous car:

    • Build car model with Lego pieces, wheels, Lego motor and Lego computer(car brain).
    • Develop software program for car brain with scratch like block coding. Software program will move car front, turn left/right etc. direction based on computer instructions.
    • Run the program from laptop which get downloaded into car brain and car moves as per computer instructions.

Model Airport:

  • Build the Model airport with Lego bricks, pieces, card boards and place airplane, car, signs on the road.

Results

  • The autonomous car drives by itself as per computer instructions, it stops at parking lots and airport terminals to pick and drop the passengers.
  • The car runs on battery, and it is environment friendly.

Conclusions, what you learned, or next steps

  • We learned scrach coding and how to write software,so that we can control the car movement.
  • This car can be upgraded with new hardware which supports camera and sensors to detect objects and make car driver more safely.
