Cupcake Metaphor for Funding

One way to think about school funding is through the metaphor of a cupcake:

    • General Fund is the cake layer of the cupcake.
    • Title I and III Funding is the frosting and sprinkles.
    • The strawberry or cherry on top is the TSP funds provided for some of our students with highest needs: English learners, low-income and

foster youth.

Cupcake Metaphor for Funding

One way to think about school funding is through the metaphor of a cupcake:

  • The purpose of Title I is to provide extra academic support for students who are failing or at risk of not meeting the state academic standards.
  • These funds come from the Federal Government.
  • Per pupil Title I allocation to schools is based on the percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
  • Positions and items funded by Title I must supplement, not supplant those provided by general funds.

Review and Respond to ELAC Recommendations on the Budget (ACTION)

Revisar y responder a las recomendaciones de ELAC (Asunto a Tratar)

Below are the responses of the SSC regarding the ELAC advice:

  • Appreciate ELAC’s suggestion to try to keep all positions. We might need to consider actions.
  • Seems counterintuitive (current state of budget) to the LAUSD strategic pillars
  • Impact on mental health of students, parents and staff (community based supports)
  • SSC is committed to organizing with stakeholders to advocate for community needs even through the restrictions of the Title 1 Budget

A contingency plan is created in the event that additional money is needed to cover other costs (ex: salary increases). In case of a budget shortage, we would take as much as needed from Release days, Stipends, and X Time. In addition, any technical corrections on a budget item would be moved to the correct funding line to taken from any non-position budget item.

      • Faculty meetings embedded in 90 min PD bank time
    • 138 regular days (387 minutes)
    • 6 minimum days (290 minutes)
    • 66,456/66,449 Required (+7 min above required)
  • Different types of days (Regular, PD, Minimum, Shortened) have required number of minutes which can never be less than minimum day (253 minutes)
  • Nutrition and lunch do not count towards instructional minutes
  • Passing periods do count for instructional minutes (details pg. 5)

105 of 202

SGC: Scheduling Committee

Response and Feedback:

  • Get student feedback regarding programs like advisory and seminar
  • By shortening days, PD time gets cut approximately in half and would need to hold faculty meetings
  • Seminar needs to meet certain minute requirements in order to meet G credit and some ELD courses are given during that block
  • Some seminars need to be able to meet a couple times per week (AP seminar, etc)
  • What can we do to make things more sustainable when the day feels long?

  • Agree that ADA funds should be reconsidered- doesn’t emcpass the struggles and needs for students at our schools
