A LITTLE BACKGROUND AND REFERENCE
INTRODUCTION
WATER LITERACY PRINCIPLES
Water Has Unique Physical and Chemical CharacteristicsThe nature of the water molecule determines the physical properties of water and its behavior. The physical and chemical properties of water are unique and complex.
Water Connects All Earth SystemsWater is an integral part of Earth’s structure and plays a unique role in Earth’s processes. It is found in the atmosphere, on the surface, and underground. The water cycle is central to life on Earth and connects Earth systems.
Water Resources Are ManagedMultiple-use of water resources leads to diverse and sometimes conflicting demands, which require water resource management practices. Management decisions involve the distribution of water resources and the protection of acceptable water quality and quantity.
Water Resources Exist within Cultural ConstructsCultures express connections to their unique water environments through art, music, language, and customs. Cultures around the world hold similar and contrasting views toward the water.

Project WET is active in
all 50 U.S. states and over 90 countries
1984
Origins of Project WET start in North Dakota
Dennis Nelson, founder, was asked to teach about groundwater in North Dakota. He was then asked to come to Montana State University to develop activities. He became CEO and President as the program quickly grew!
AWWA
Founded in 1881, AWWA is the largest organization of water supply professionals in the world.
Membership includes more than 4,300 utilities that supply roughly 80% of North America’s drinking water and treat almost half of North America’s wastewater.
50,000+ members represent the full spectrum of the water community: water and wastewater systems, environmental advocates, scientists, academicians, and others who hold a genuine interest in water, our most vital resource.
The American Water Works Association is an international, nonprofit, scientific, and educational association dedicated to a better world through better water.
