How Can the Savior Help Me Overcome My Fears?
How Can the Savior Help Me Overcome My Fears?
SCRIPTURE
22-24 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live. And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.
35 …there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?
36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
39-41 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn…And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her…Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
- Mark 5:22-24, 35, 39-42
How Can the Savior Help Me Overcome My Fears?
Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
The more I come to know my Heavenly Father, the more I see how He inspires and leads His children…I don’t believe God wants His children to be fearful or dwell on the evils of the world. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” He has given us an abundance of reasons to rejoice. We just need to find and to recognize them. The Lord often reminds us to “be not afraid,” to “be of good cheer,” and to “fear not, little flock.” …In the face of fear, let us find our courage, muster our faith, and have confidence…
Christ’s perfect love allows us to walk with humility, dignity, and a bold confidence as followers of our beloved Savior. Christ’s perfect love gives us the confidence to press through our fears and place our complete trust in the power and goodness of our Heavenly Father and of His Son, Jesus Christ. In our homes, in our places of business, in our Church callings, in our hearts, let us replace fear with Christ’s perfect love. Christ’s love will replace fear with faith!
- Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Perfect Love Casteth Out Fear,”General Conference, April 2017
When Faith Endures(Hymn Book #128)
MUSIC
I will not doubt, I will not fear;
God’s love and strength are always near.
His promised gift helps me to find
An inner strength and peace of mind.
I give the Father willingly
My trust, my prayers, humility.
His Spirit guides; his love assures
That fear departs when faith endures.

How Can the Savior Help Me Overcome My Fears?
0:57
Christ has power to heal us physically and spiritually
Christ has power to heal us physically and spiritually
SCRIPTURE
25-26 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
27-28 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
33-34 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
- Mark 5:25-28, 30, 33-34
Christ has power to heal us physically and spiritually
Gordon B. Hinckley
President of the Church
1995 - 2008
I have…reflected much on the power of Christ to heal and bless. It was He who said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” In a world of sickness and sorrow, of tension and jealousy and greed, there must be much of healing if there is to be life abundant… And there is much of sickness among us other than that of the body. There is the sickness of sin.
…Jesus of Nazareth healed the sick among whom He moved. His regenerating power is with us today to be invoked through His holy priesthood. His divine teachings, His incomparable example, His matchless life, His all-encompassing sacrifice will bring healing to broken hearts, reconciliation to those who argue and shout, even peace to warring nations if sought with humility and forgiveness and love.
- President Gordon B. Hinckley, “The Healing Power of Christ,”General Conference, October 1988
The Miracle(by Shawna Edwards)
MUSIC
For God so loved the world
That He gave His only Begotten Son
That whosoever believeth in him shall not perish
But have everlasting life
Jesus walked upon the water
He stilled the storm and calmed the angry sea
With His hands He healed the leper
He made the lame to walk, the blind to see
He fed a thousand people with a loaf or two of bread
And when the ruler's daughter died
He raised her from the dead
Jesus is a God of miracles
Nothing is at all impossible to Him
But I know this
Of all His miracles, the most incredible must be
The miracle that rescues me
Jesus bled and died to save me
A price that I could never pay alone
When He rose again, He gave me
The greatest gift the world has ever known
Yes, I can be forgiven every time that I repent
And someday He will lift me up to live with Him again
Jesus is a God of miracles
Nothing is at all impossible to Him
But I know this:
Of all His miracles the most incredible must be
The miracle that rescues me
The miracle that rescues you and me

Jesus called Twelve Apostles and gave them power to do His work
Jesus called Twelve Apostles and gave them power to do His work
SCRIPTURE
1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.
4 And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
6 And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
- Luke 9:1-5, 6
Jesus called Twelve Apostles and gave them power to do His work
Boyd K. Packer
Former President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
The calling of an Apostle goes back to the Lord Jesus Christ…The Lord Himself set in motion this pattern of administration: “He went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles.” And He told the Twelve, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”…And He said, “[The] Twelve hold the keys to open up the authority of my kingdom upon the four corners of the earth, and after that to send my word to every creature.”
…The present Twelve are very ordinary people. They are not, as the original Twelve were not, spectacular individually, but collectively the Twelve are a power…Almost to a man, the Twelve come from humble beginnings, as it was when He was here. The living Twelve are welded together in the ministry of the gospel of Jesus Christ. When the call came, each has put down his nets, so to speak, and followed the Lord.
- Elder Boyd K. Packer, “The Twelve,”General Conference, April 2008

Jesus called Twelve Apostles and gave them power to do His work
Following Jesus Christ requires sacrifice
Following Jesus Christ requires sacrifice
SCRIPTURE
23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
- Luke 9:23-25
Following Jesus Christ requires sacrifice
M. Russell Ballard
Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
Our commitment to the kingdom should match that of our faithful ancestors even though our sacrifices are different…Our sacrifices may be more subtle but no less demanding. Instead of physical deprivation and hardship, we face the challenge of remaining true and faithful to gospel principles amidst…evil and destructive forces…Sacrifice is a demonstration of pure love. The degree of our love for the Lord, for the gospel, and for our fellowman can be measured by what we are willing to sacrifice for them. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ manifested the supreme example of this love…
The principle of sacrifice should be taught in every Latter-day Saint home and should be practiced in many simple yet important ways. Today we are not called to pull handcarts through the snow-swept plains of Wyoming. However, we are called to live, foster, and teach the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is our privilege to invest our means and our time to bless others.
- President M. Russell Ballard, “The Blessings of Sacrifice,” General Conference, April 1992
Dare to Do Right(Children’s Songbook #158)
MUSIC
1. Dare to do right! Dare to be true!
You have a work that no other can do;
Do it so bravely, so kindly, so well,
Angels will hasten the story to tell.
2. Dare to do right! Dare to be true!
Other men's failures can never save you.
Stand by your conscience, your honor, your faith;
Stand like a hero and battle till death.
Chorus:
Dare, dare, dare to do right;
Dare, dare, dare to be true,
Dare to be true, dare to be true.

Following Jesus Christ requires sacrifice
When we are in the Lord’s service, He will inspire us with what to say
When we are in the Lord’s service, He will inspire us with what to say
SCRIPTURE
17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
18 And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
- Matthew 10:17-20
When we are in the Lord’s service, He will inspire us with what to say
David M. McConkie
Former Counselor in the Sunday School General Presidency
Speaking to teachers today, the First Presidency stated: “The most important part of your service will be your own daily spiritual preparation, including prayer, scripture study, and obedience to the commandments…The Holy Ghost will help you to know what to do. Your own testimony will grow, your conversion will be deepened, and you will be strengthened to meet the challenges of life.”…As you dedicate yourself to living the gospel with greater purpose than ever before and search the scriptures, treasuring them up in your heart,…the Holy Ghost will be able to bring all things to your remembrance. Indeed, “it shall be given you in the very hour, yea, in the very moment, what ye shall say.” When this happens, you will find yourself saying something that you did not plan to say. Then, if you will pay attention, you will learn something from the things that you say when you teach. President Marion G. Romney said, “I always know when I am speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost because I always learn something from what I’ve said.”

I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go(Hymn Book #270)
MUSIC
1. It may not be on the mountain height
Or over the stormy sea,
It may not be at the battle’s front
My Lord will have need of me.
But if, by a still, small voice he calls
To paths that I do not know,
I’ll answer, dear Lord, with my hand in thine:
I’ll go where you want me to go.
2. Perhaps today there are loving words
Which Jesus would have me speak;
There may be now in the paths of sin
Some wand’rer whom I should seek.
O Savior, if thou wilt be my guide,
Tho dark and rugged the way,
My voice shall echo the message sweet:
I’ll say what you want me to say.

3. There’s surely somewhere a lowly place
In earth’s harvest fields so wide
Where I may labor through life’s short day
For Jesus, the Crucified.
So trusting my all to thy tender care,
And knowing thou lovest me,
I’ll do thy will with a heart sincere:
I’ll be what you want me to be.
Chorus:
I’ll go where you want me to go, dear Lord,
Over mountain or plain or sea;
I’ll say what you want me to say, dear Lord;
I’ll be what you want me to be.
When we are in the Lord’s service, He will inspire us with what to say
“He that loseth his life for my sake shall find it”
“He that loseth his life for my sake shall find it”
SCRIPTURE
37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
- Matthew 10:37-39
“He that loseth his life for my sake shall find it”
Ulisses Soares
Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
Through this declaration, the Savior emphasized that all those who are willing to follow Him need to deny themselves and control their desires, appetites, and passions, sacrificing everything, even life itself if necessary, being entirely submissive to the will of the Father—just as He did. This is, in fact, the price to be paid for the salvation of a soul. Jesus purposely and metaphorically used the symbol of a cross to help His disciples better understand what sacrifice and devotion to the Lord’s cause would truly mean. The image of a cross was well known among His disciples and the inhabitants of the Roman Empire …
We learn through the scriptures that those who wish to take their cross upon themselves love Jesus Christ in such a way that they deny themselves of all ungodliness and of every worldly lust and keep His commandments.
- Elder Ulisses Soares, “Take Up Our Cross,”General Conference, October 2019
I Will Be What I Believe(Music for Children)
MUSIC
1. Living in this world
with change all around
But with the prophets' words,
I'll stand on solid ground
Even though it's still hard,
with questions that arise
Every day, I will say
2. We'll spread the gospel wide
throughout all the earth
With Jesus as our guide
we'll wield the sword of truth
Even though it's still hard,
with questions that arise
Every day, I will say
We are as the army of Helaman
We have been taught in our youth
And we will be the Lord's missionaries to
bring the world his truth

Chorus:
I'll have faith like brother Joseph
and the strength of the pioneers
I'll be brave as a stripling warrior
and like Nephi persevere
I will spread God's love to all I know and serve
I will plead with my Father on my knees
I will be what I believe
“He that loseth his life for my sake shall find it”
The End
What did Jesus mean by “I came not to send peace, but a sword”?
SCRIPTURE
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
35-36 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.
37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
- Matthew 10:34-37, 39
“He that loseth his life for my sake shall find it”
Come, Follow Me
Elder D. Todd Christofferson taught: “I’m confident that a number of you have been rejected and ostracized by father and mother, brothers and sisters as you accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ and entered into His covenant. In one way or another, your superior love of Christ has required the sacrifice of relationships that were dear to you, and you have shed many tears. Yet with your own love undiminished, you hold steady under this cross, showing yourself unashamed of the Son of God” (“Finding Your Life,” Ensign, Mar. 2016, 28).
This willingness to lose cherished relationships in order to follow the Savior comes with a promise that “he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it” (Matthew 10:39).

What did Jesus mean by “I came not to send peace, but a sword”?
Jeffrey R. Holland
Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
[I]t is a characteristic of our age that if people want any gods at all, they want them to be gods who do not demand much, comfortable gods…Sometimes—and this seems the greatest irony of all—these folks invoke the name of Jesus as one who was this kind of “comfortable” God. Really? He who said not only should we not break commandments, but we should not even think about breaking them. And if we do think about breaking them, we have already broken them in our heart…And what of those who just want to look at sin or touch it from a distance? Jesus said with a flash, if your eye offends you, pluck it out. If your hand offends you, cut it off. “I came not to [bring] peace, but a sword,” He warned those who thought He spoke only soothing platitudes. No wonder that, sermon after sermon, the local communities “pray[ed] him to depart out of their coasts.”…Live the gospel faithfully even if others around you don’t live it at all. Defend your beliefs with courtesy and with compassion, but defend them.
- Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, “The Cost- and Blessings- of Discipleship,”General Conference, April 2014
