What is the Reimagining Government Community ANZ?

The Reimagining Government Community is a collective of people who feel an affinity to the Centre for Public Impact’s (CPI) vision for better government, and who are committed to exploring and supporting that vision in different ways.

Exactly what that involvement in the Community looks like can differ - from light-touch involvement through our Community of Practice through to actively working with another community member and/or with the CPI ANZ team on a project (see slide 7).

The Reimagining Government Community ANZ already exists to some degree. We have a Community of Practice with more than 500 members, as well as people from outside of the core CPI ANZ team who are actively working with us on projects.

However, we have a bigger vision for what we think the Community can and should be, and now feels like the right time to be more deliberate about how we want to cultivate, nurture and extend the Community in new ways.

This slide deck is our attempt to set out our vision for the Reimagining Government Community ANZ.

Why are we doing this?

We are developing the Reimagining Government Community ANZ for three main reasons…

We want to experiment with a different form of growth; one which expresses itself as propagation, rather than scale. While we have too much work to service as a core team, we want to explore what it means and looks like to respond to this demand not by growing and bringing more people to the core team, but by growing a network of people around us who can work with and alongside us to progress our vision for better government.

We want to practise an abundance, rather a deficit, mindset. Instead of seeing our relationship with other people and organisations who are working in similar spaces as competitive in nature, we want to reframe how we work alongside each other as a collective effort, where our work - separately and together - is viewed as being in service of the change we are all working towards.

We know that we will only be able to realise our vision to reimagine government by cultivating and nurturing relationships with other actors in our ecosystem - reimagining government is not something that CPI can do alone! The Community gives us a chance to weave connections in different ways, build new relationships, deepen existing ones, and support collective efforts to shift the system of which we are a part.

What do we hope you will you get from this?

There are two main benefits we hope this Community will offer…

Mutual

Support

The Community will offer all of its members support from others who understand how challenging and slow this work can be, and who appreciate how counter-cultural these new ways of working can be. There will be some issues that only those who work in and around government can understand and support you with.

Sharing resources and opportunities

There will be approaches, techniques, toolkits and materials that others in the Community have developed or used, that you might be able to benefit from. We are sure you will bring some of your own too. There will be people you haven’t met who will be willing and able to work with you, spurring opportunities for new shared projects and endeavours.

“One of the most vital ways we sustain ourselves is by building communities of resistance, places where we know we are not alone.”

- bell hooks

There are three ways to be part of the Community

There are three ways to get involved. They are not mutually exclusive - Community Members can be involved in just one, or all of these ways. We would encourage all Community Members to be part of the CoP.

Joining the Reimagining Government Community of Practice (CoP)

Becoming a Reimagining Government Network Member

Working with CPI ANZ as a Collaborator

This means:

  • Joining the Reimagining Government Community of Practice Slack Channel to share ideas and conversations with other CoP members
  • Attending CoP events
  • Attending Reimagining Government webinars

This means:

  • Receiving invitations to quarterly lunch and learn sessions + an annual community meal
  • Opportunity to contribute to CPI blogs + newsletter
  • Priority access to Collaborator opportunities - no need to submit an EOI
  • Access to a private Slack Channel designed to support Network Members to share ideas and challenges as well as explore opportunities to collaborate on projects with CPI and other Network Members

This means:

  • Actively working with CPI on a specific project/s as a paid contractor, with day rates to be negotiated on a case-by-case basis - e.g. our current Program Manager for the work we’re doing with the APS Academy is a Collaborator.
  • Receiving a CPI email address for the duration of the project
  • Joining the CPI ANZ Slack Channel for the duration of the project
  • Access to CPI Platforms (e.g. Miro, Slack etc)
  • Receiving invitation to an annual Community meal

CPI COLLABORATORS

COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE

REIMAGINING GOVERNMENT COMMUNITY

CPI ANZ as community steward and network weaver

COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE MEMBERS

People who are interested in sharing and exploring ideas around what it means to reimagine government.

We imagine all Collaborators and Network members will join the CoP.

NETWORK MEMBERS People who are connected by a shared vision to reimagine government and have the ability to work on projects together and with CPI (i.e. freelancers or people within organisations who could work on collaborative projects).

Network members may choose to become CPI Collaborators, if the right opportunity presents itself, but this is not a requirement.

CPI COLLABORATORS

Community members who are actively collaborating on a project with CPI.

They may also be, or choose to become Network Members, as well as members of the Community of Practice.

Diversity

CPI’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Policy will underpin the Reimagining Government Community of Practice. This means…

The thread of our connection needs to be less based on what we do, and more around shared beliefs and values.

We will be actively seeking to curate a Community characterised by diversity of all kinds - gender, ethnicity, sexuality, cultural heritage, capabilities, skill-sets, lived experience, formal qualifications, and professional background.

Diversity enriches our commitment to a more just society and enhances our ability to enact change so governments help societies to better respond to complex challenges.
