Architectural Design II Exercise 1.3
Introduction
Nashville’s housing market remains one of the hottest markets in the United States. As families make moves from big cities to the suburban towns, there has been an influx of buyers in Nashville. One area where this is happening fast is in East Nashville, where the new houses being built are called “Tall and Skinny”.
We have designed for incoming couples looking to expand their family. This will preserve the family feel of the community and surrounding areas.
Site analysis

Site Plan
Initial Ideas (Tai)
Initially I wanted the home to be very traditional.
I knew we wanted to incorporate a courtyard, so i was trying to make it so it would fit into the home naturally.
I was very conflicted on how I wanted my second floor room to be organized.
Final floor plan
When entering the final layout of my plans. I decided to add a balcony onto the master bedroom. I wanted the home to be based on open outdoor spaces. I also wanted to make sure I created areas that they were not conflicting with each other in any significant ways.
Initial design ideas (deasia)
Phase 1
Phase 2
When brought to this assignment, I envisioned a house:
Final floor plan
After two design phases, integration of both designs were translated into the final floor plans. With that,I wanted this home to be targeted to a family of four that can have guests anytime but still have that privacy. I also decided to add a guest bedroom into the house which can be extra space for the family in case there is an addition to the family.
Courtyard line-up
When brought this assignment, as a team, we wanted to incorporate the traditional Chinese courtyard homes into our home designs. We thought a good way to bring our neighboring homes together were by having them share a courtyard. However, we put a twist to it, by having them on the second floor.

Roof plans
During the design phase, we decided on having slanted roofs. We wanted the homes appear to be a larger home split in half. It gives them a sense of unity, while also having their own style as well.
Building analysis
Building analysis
Level 1 exemplifies the public vs. private diagram the best. The kitchen can be a private place away from guests, however it can also be used to host dinner parties and tastings. The entrance door into this home will be considered a private space as hidden away from the street.
The served vs. serviced diagram is more suitable for the level 2 of this home. Served spaces are those that are actively used. They are meant for habitation and primary occupants of the space of this home.
