Chapter 1: Preparing to Use Technology
By: Samantha McDaniel
No Child Left Behind Act:
~This act emphasized the importance of integrating technology in learning
Should Teachers Use Technology?
*Is there support for technology Integration?
~International Society for Technology in Education: A nonprofit professional organization with international scope that focuses on improving teaching and learning through the effective integration of technology in PK-12 and teacher education https://www.iste.org/
~National Educational Technology Standards for teachers (NETS-T): These standards are designed to guide teacher preparation programs and define the fundamental concepts, knowledge, skills, and attitudes for applying technology in educational settings
~Technology Profiles: Identify ten performance indicators that a student should master before the completion of the top grade in the range to be considered technology literate (To accomplish this feat, school faculties must systematically work together to ensure that the performance indicators are mastered.)
*Becoming a Technology-Using Teacher:
~5 Stages: Entry, Adoption, Adaptation, Appropriation, and Invention
1) Entry- Teachers experience the challenges of using
technology in the classroom
2) Adoption- Teachers gain confidence as they work with students and learn from past mistakes
3) Adaptation- Teachers begin to make technology work for them in the classroom and in their administrative duties
4) Appropriation- Teachers begin to accept new teaching responsibilities
5) Invention- Teachers are eager to change teaching practice from the traditional methods
*13 Essential conditions: Necessary conditions to effectively leverage technology for learning
~shared vision, implementation planning, consistent and adequate funding, equitable access, skilled personnel, ongoing professional learning, technical support, curriculum framework, student-centered learning, assessment and evaluation, engaged communities, support policies, and supportive external context.
*Preparing for Instruction by Planning:
~Integrating technology into the curriculum would be difficult without attention to the importance of planning
~Unit Plan: composed of a series of lesson plans on related information
~Lesson Plan: relate specific information about the lesson
~Lesson Goal: contained in a broad statement of intent and is written in very general terms
~Standards Alignment: Lesson should be aligned with the curriculum standards
~Instructional Objectives: describe the student learning outcome
~Materials, Resources, and Technology: the materials, resources, and technology that are needed during the lesson should be listed
Preparing for Instruction continued...
~Level of performance and knowledge: identifying learners' performance and knowledge levels is very important to planning any type of instruction
~Classroom layout: describes how the classroom is arranged and will be used during the lesson to promote learning
*Transforming Learning Environments with Technology:
~Teacher-directed, memory-focused instruction
~Limited media, single-sense stimulation
~Media-rich, multisensory stimulation
~Student-centered, performance-focused learning
~Converging information and communication systems
~Digital illiteracies and communication skills
~Expanded focus including digital global citizenship
