Weight

  • Weight is how hard you have to throw the stone
    • Different shots require different weights
    • Leg drive and how long stone is held before release determine weight (not pushing!)
  • Weight changes as ice changes
    • Over the course of a game, especially from early ends
    • Between venues (experience on different ice helps)

Weight

  • When judging weight, communication is key
    • 2-way communication
    • Skip calls, sweepers update
  • Hog-to-hog timing system is good for all curlers

Weight

    • Draws are usually indicated by where skip points broom
    • Takeouts are often indicated by tapping the rock to be removed
    • Takeout weight indicated by hand signals & weight indication, to be shown on ice

12 of 22

More Weight

  • Different terminology
    • Common draw weight terms: short, top of house, tee, back house, deep
    • Common hit weight terms: hack, board, control, normal, peel (sometimes with up/down)
    • Best if team discusses terms they'll use
    • Numbering systems (1 to 10 is common)
