Staying Safe at School
For JK-5 students

We Practice Being Safe
Just like we practice fire drills, we practice safety drills too.
Our teachers and grown-ups plan and practice so they always know how to help.
It's normal — schools everywhere practice these together!
Every drill ends with everyone safe and back to learning.
Practice makes
us ready!

Our #1 Rule
Always Listen to Your Teacher
No matter what happens, your teacher will tell you exactly what to do.
Your job is simple: listen, stay calm, and stay together.

3
HOLD
Stay and play!
What we do:
We stay right where we are — in our classroom or area.
The hallway clears, and everyone stays put.
We keep doing our work and playing, just like always.
We wait quietly until our teacher says it's all clear.
Think of it like a quiet “stay in your spot” game — nothing to worry about!

SECURE
Everybody comes inside!
What we do:
Everyone who is outside comes back inside the building.
Grown-ups lock the outside doors to keep our school snug and safe.
We keep doing our work and playing like normal.
Our teachers are extra watchful, just to be sure.
It's like locking the front door at home — just an extra safe feeling!

LOCKDOWN
Quiet as a mouse!
What we do:
We move to our own quiet, cozy spot away from the door and windows.
Our teacher turns off the lights.
We stay very, very quiet.
We wait calmly for our teacher.
This is our quietest, calmest bodies — we practice it so we're always ready.

EVACUATE
Walking feet!
What we do:
We leave our things behind and use our walking feet.
We line up with our class and hold the line.
We follow our teacher to a safe spot.
Our teacher counts everyone to make sure we're all together.
Just like a fire drill — we walk calmly to our safe meeting spot.

SHELTER
Find our safety spot!
What we do:
For big weather, like a storm, we go to our safety spot.
We crouch down low and cover our heads and necks.
We stay together and stay calm.
We wait for our teacher to say it's safe to get up.
We practice “drop, cover, and hold” so our bodies remember what to do.
