I have been working with Kathryn Ricketts for several months as she grapples with and applies Indigenization and reconciliation to her teaching and research. Recently, I heard Ry Moran, the Director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, describe three requirements for reconciliation: UNDRIP, the TRC's Calls to Action, and the TRC's Principles of Reconciliation. UNDRIP states that any issue that pertains to Indigenous peoples' ways of being, knowledge systems, or rights requires a duty to consult. Kathryn's commitment to reconciliation is rooted in this notion of duty to consult. The Elders/Knowledge Keepers who work in her Faculty inform her approach. She further approached my office (the Office of Indigenization) for support, guidance, and resources. It was through the partnership that she and I built that I witnessed a knowledge keeper (who I work closely with) extend to Kathryn the invitation to learn Indigenous ways of knowing and protocols. Kathryn accepted it with gratitude, and as she learns this worldview, she continues to express respect for these ways of knowing.
