What is the Dual Enrollment Program?

Students may take courses at a local college & earn credits at the high school and the college

Tuition, fees, books, and application fees are paid for through the Georgia Department of Education for 30 credit hours or 45 quarter hours

Need to Know: DE Funding (GAfutures.org)

Eligibility by Grade Level

  • 9th grade- no longer covered by DE funding
  • 10th grade- technical/CTAE courses or academics only if SAT-1200/ACT-26
  • 11th & 12th grade- academic and/or technical/CTAE courses

Funding for 30 credit hours or 45 quarter hours

After two state funded course withdrawals or failures, a student is no longer eligible to for Dual Enrollment

Self pay can be used for students (9th-12th) who are not eligible for DE funding, or students who have maxed out their funded credit hours

Students cannot receive funding for repeat/retake courses

Males 18 years and older are now required to register with Selective Service in order to receive DE funding

Understand SCHS graduation requirements

You must have a full schedule of 8 classes

  • If you take 2 Dual Enrollment courses then you must have 6 classes @ SCHS
  • Can pair with Work Based Learning

You are in charge of ensuring your college courses do not conflict with your SCHS schedule/extracurriculars

Understanding grading of DE classes

A = 95

B = 85

C = 75

D = 70

F = 65

*An additional 10 points will be added to the points above on the transcript for academic courses taken at the college. Non-academic courses are not awarded the 10 points.

**Some colleges after high school may not recognize those 10 additional points.

***The HOPE Program does not recognize the 10 points. Instead, a student’s HOPE GPA will calculate DE courses by adding 0.5 to the grade awarded by the college. Ex. If the student earns an 85 on the college transcript, HOPE GPA will award a 3.5 on the 4.0 scale GPA.

*10 points do not apply to a class that is failed

  • Career, Technical, Agricultural, and Educational offerings will NOT receive the 10 points like an AP/DE academic courses. Additionally they will NOT count towards HOPE GPA.

    • Apply by March 15th, 2023
    • Be sure to send all supplemental materials required by the college (transcripts, test scores, etc.)
    • Adhere to college application deadlines

    • Receive an acceptance
    • Set up college email!
    • Student MUST be willing to investigate what they need/want to take
      • Check DE Course Directory for approved DE courses
      • Speak to college representative/website
    • Use GATRACS to see how your Dual Enrollment courses can be transferred to your college of choice
  • Step 5: Set up a Meeting with Ms. Harris and DE College Adviser
  • Step 6: Register for Your Classes
    • Adhere to college’s academic calendar and registration window
    • Register EARLY (seats will fill up quickly)
    • Consider travel time, course load, remaining graduation requirements, SCHS bell schedule, and other possible ramifications tied to your course choices

Student Responsibilities

  • Finish the classes that you enroll in
    • Students must have a grade posted on their transcript- you MUST have 8 credits a year!
  • Study harder than you ever have!
  • Do not give up!
  • Talk to your professors, go to office hours for help, seek tutoring if needed
  • Bring your grades to Mrs. Kitchens in the counseling office at the end of the semester as soon as they are available each quarter/semester

Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

  • You know your student!
    • Are they ready for the social/emotional component of DE? Age difference of college students?
    • Will they initiate a conversation with a professor?
  • Recognize your student might not make an A in every class in college and be okay with it
    • We do not drop classes for HOPE Scholarship, Honor Graduate, Top Ten, or Val/Sal eligibility
  • Be prepared to NOT have access to talk to your student’s professor if there is an issue
  • Know and understand the rules that govern this program outlined in the SCHS permission form

Counselor Responsibilities

  • Advise students on course options, rules that govern Dual Enrollment, and potential problems with choices
    • Earning college credits can accelerate your student having to declare a major. If they dual enroll for numerous courses, they could possibly have to declare their major sooner. Are they sure what that major would be?
  • Craft a schedule at SCHS that can coexist with your dual enrollment courses SCHS schedule takes precedence!
  • Approve classes in the GAfutures funding application for course payment
  • Guide info session, planning session, and 1:1 meeting with students and families

Tips for Success From Your Counselor

  • Choose a course to take that you may need in the future for your college program
  • Understand you will have less grades in college than you might in a class at SCHS
  • Attend to all deadlines and details
  • There is less time in a college course. Pros: more free time Cons: more free time. Time management is key!
  • You will be treated as a college student at the college- SCHS does not have the ability to help with a class that is not taught by us. Get to know your professors & advisor at the college!

  1. Take this form to all of your current SCHS teachers in order to get their recommendations by THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 2023.
  2. Take this Teacher Recommendation Form to your DE Planning Session in the Media Center with Ms. Harris on FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 2023 during one of your classes (except 3B). If your teachers have given you positive recommendations, Ms. Harris will give you an orange Dual Enrollment Worksheet to complete during the planning session. The orange planning sheet MUST be complete (including signatures) to register for Dual Enrollment next year.
