Pathways Reminder

Pathways Reminder

  • You are all graduating with an Associate of Arts degree.
  • You are NOT graduating from high school with a Nursing degree, or a Business degree, or an Engineering degree, etc.
  • Your pathway is just a way to focus your classes. If you talk all of the classes on the Business pathway at TCC you should only have about 2 years (roughly 60 hours) of classes to take at a university to earn a bachelors degree in Business.

Degree Audits

  • Just another way to see what classes are required for your degree, what you have already taken, and what you have left to take. It’s an unofficial record of what you have done at TCC.
  • It doesn’t list the classes specific to your pathway, but Ms. McCord can help you with that.
  • You don’t have access to this. Email Ms. McCord whenever you would like a copy of yours.

GPA, Academic Standing, and Dropping a Class

12 of 20

Grade Point Average (GPA)

  • Your TCC GPA is based completely on grades in your classes at TCC. Your TCC GPA will not follow you to a university, because GPA is unique to the school you take classes at.
  • To graduate from a college or university you are required to have a 2.0 GPA, which is a C average. A few majors out there will require a higher GPA.
    • Ex. TCC’s Associate of Arts in Teaching degree requires students to have a 2.75 GPA to graduate.
    • Ex. UTA’s Nursing program requires students to have a 2.75 GPA in order to apply.

GPA and Academic Standing at TCC

  • You are considered to be in Good Standing if your GPA is a 2.0 or higher.
  • The first semester your GPA goes below a 2.0, you are placed on Academic Probation.
  • If your semester GPA is below a 2.0 after the semester you are on Academic Probation, you move to Academic Suspension.
  • Once you are on Academic Suspension you are required to meet with a Senior Career Advisor until your cumulative GPA is back to a 2.0.

Calculating GPA

  • A 90-100 4.0
  • B 80-89 3.0
  • C 70-79 2.0
  • D 60-69 1.0
  • F 0-59 0.0
  • Calculate grade points by multiplying the grade point for each class by the number of credit hours
    • Ex. You made an A in DRAM 1310, which is 3 credits. 3 x 4.0 = 12
  • Add the grade points together. Add the credits together. Divide grade points by total credit hours.

Calculating GPA

  • A 90-100 4.0
  • B 80-89 3.0
  • C 70-79 2.0
  • D 60-69 1.0
  • F 0-59 0.0

DRAM 1310 3 credits, you made a B

KINE 1164 1 credit, you made an A

EDUC 1300 3 credits, you made a C

3 credits x 3.0 = 9

1 credit x 4.0 = 4

3 credits x 2.0 = 6

Grade Points: 9 + 4 + 6 = 19

Credits: 3 + 1 + 3 = 7

19/7 = 2.71

Dropping a class

  • Dropping a class results in a grade of W, for withdrawn.
  • A “W” is not used to calculate GPA.
  • You are allowed 6 late drops during your entire college career. Any drops that happen after the official day of record (called the Census Date) count against this limit.
  • Dual Credit and Early College High School students are exempt from the 6-drop limit, however dropping a TCC class can count for any attempt rules that a specific major has.
    • Ex. Most Nursing programs require you to pass your science classes with a C or better in the first 2 attempts. A drop, even in high school, counts as an attempt.

Competitive GPAs

  • 3.7-4.0 is phenomenal. You can get into grad school, medical school, law school, etc. programs with this (but still, the closer to 4.0 the better).
    • This GPA would also earn you the best scholarships.
  • 3.5-3.6 is great. You aren’t guaranteed to get into a competitive program, but with good supporting documentation (test scores, essays, letters of recommendation, etc.) you have a really good chance at getting in.
    • You would qualify for good scholarships with this GPA.
  • 3.0-3.4 is solid, but you’ll need good supporting documentation and a lucky break or two to get into a competitive program.
    • You’ll qualify for the most basic scholarships.
  • Anything below a 3.0 is unlikely to get you into competitive programs unless a lot of things go your way.
    • You also most likely won’t qualify for scholarships with this GPA.
