How does Coombe Boys’ School promote Encounters with Employers GB 5?

GB5. Encounters with Employers and Employees

Coombe Boys' School aims to ensure:

Every student will have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace.

This is evidenced through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes, as well students’ own work experiences.

Yr 10 Work Experience - (Gatsby Benchmark 6)

When- 27-31st of March- The week before Easter Holidays.

School provides the opportunity for the Boys’ to find work experience. Students (with help from you!) need to find their own placement. This is an important part of the process.

We will provide admin support-

  • We will phone to check the students turn up and placements are appropriate.
  • We will then phone to check with the employer at the end of the week on progress.

The school will not visit the place of work to check health and safety. We are not expected to and do not have the skills to carry this out.

Many schools do not offer this in KS4. It is something we have successful run even post pandemic last year (we were the only local school to do so). There will also be another work experience opportunity at the end of Yr 12 which is mandatory for all pupils.

From Last Years Y10-

Thinking about how to find the placement

14 of 30

What is the purpose of this work experience?

Ultimately, to help the pupils to focus on their academic work.

The week in the world of work often provides a “reality check” to the Y10 pupils.

  • It helps them consider their long term plans.
  • It also helps with their soft skills- dealing with people who are not teachers and makes them realise what jobs they don’t want to do!

We do not expect them to find their long term career in Y10. Any work experience is fine. We do not expect them to be shadowing the likes of brain surgeons!

Many companies do not take under 16’s so family/friend networks are really important at this point.

Although it may appear daunting, nearly every student manages this every year via their own contacts. We have very limited capacity to help student find placements.

From a personal point of view most issues I have is from students who we have occasionally helped out with placements- there is no “buy in” if it a placement is given to them.

What do Parents / Guardians need to do….

  • We will consider any placement- even abroad.
  • Some pupils have combined work experience with a family visit to relatives- last year we had Dubai and Sweden as two destinations.

Access to Google Forms

  • All the forms are on the school website.
  • Paper copies for the parents/ Employers are available - we will just fill in the data on the forms for you if you are not able.

Ideal Deadline (Wed 14th Dec) Majority of the forms before end of term.

Final Deadline (Wed 8th February 2023)

  • If a firm does not have Employers Liability Insurance (often because they are small- much more common post pandemic) we would need a note from you to acknowledge that you are aware of this.

Introduction to Unifrog

for parents

19 of 30

What is Unifrog?

  • Unifrog believe that destinations - where students end up after school - is even more important than their academic performance. They partner with schools to support students to progress into the best opportunity for them.

  • Unifrog do this by providing a one-stop-shop where students can explore their interests, then find and successfully apply for their best next-step after school.
