Types of Applications and Admissions

Early Decision

  • Apply in early fall
  • Learn of the decision in December and accept or reject the offer in 2 weeks. If accepted, must withdraw all other applications
  • Nonrefundable deposit at the time of acceptance.
  • Only do this if you are 100% certain-BINDING

Early Action

  • Apply in the early fall. Learn of the school’s decision to admit, decline, or defer by January
  • Have until May to decide whether to accept or decline an offer
  • May apply to other schools after hearing of the school’s decision
  • NONBINDING.

Regular Admissions

NCAA Process-Need to Know

  1. Parents should check to make sure your student/athlete is taking 16 NCAA-approved core courses. Ma
  2. Students need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center by junior year of high school.
  3. Be aware of NCAA rules for when and how college coaches can contact recruits.
  4. Register your child for an NCAA Certification account for D1 and D2 or a Profile page for D3, to allow for official college visits.
  5. Help your student athlete create an online recruiting profile that includes their athletic accomplishments, statistics, and a highlight video showcasing their skills.
  6. Research schools and focus on both the academic and the athletic environment of potential colleges.
  7. Encourage your child to be proactive and communicate with college coaches.

ALASKA PERFORMANCE SCHOLARSHIP

  • The Alaska Performance Scholarship (APS) is Alaska’s merit based scholarship program, awarding students up to $28,000 total towards their postsecondary education.
  • To qualify for APS, students must complete a specific high school curriculum and meet either a minimum GPA or minimum standardized test score.
  • APS eligibility is reported to ACPE by the Alaska Department of Education in mid August. Create an account on the Alaska Student Aid Portal (ASAP) to monitor your eligibility information.

Common App Essay Prompts 25-26

  1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
  2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
  3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
  4. Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
  5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
  6. Describe a topic, idea or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
  7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
