Read & follow these instructions! This process is NOT intuitive. This application is NOT written from a farmer’s perspective but for a grocery store.

Pro Tip: if this is the 1st year for you accepting SNAP EBT, it can also be your 1st year open ‘under current ownership.’

Pro Tip: if you have a “Minnesota Grown” license, you can use it here. It’s optional.

PRINT your application & save it!

  1. Scan your driver’s license and save the file as Your-Name-Drivers-License
  2. Scan your social security card and save the file as Your-Name-SSN-Card
  3. Scan a Business License card and save as Your-Name-Business-License (if you have one)
  4. Upload each file 1-by-1 on the next screen
  5. FNS (Food Nutrition Services):

    • FNS will email you with questions if needed or
    • Emails you with a success message and you FNS Number!

Step 4: Ordering Your Card Reader

Once successfully accepted by the USDA and you have your FNS number, contact Minnesota Department of Human Services to acquire your free card reader machine. Minnesota offers free wireless point of sale (POS) equipment for FNS-approved farmers' markets and direct marketing farmers in Minnesota. The equipment processes SNAP EBT benefits only and must be within range of an AT&T or Verizon cell tower.

Step 4: Ordering Your Card Reader

To request equipment email the following information to FarmersMarket.Equipment.DHS@state.mn.us:

      • Market/Farm Name
      • Address
      • Email
      • Phone
      • FNS #
      • Contact Name (this must be the person approved with FNS)
        • Note: Equipment must be requested by the person approved by FNS to accept SNAP benefits.

MN DHS connects you with FIS, the service provider who sends you the free card reader machine and provides the free transactions. FIS works with you to make sure the machines are operational.
