“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” - Charles Dickens in A Tale of Two Cities
Indirect vs direct speech
Indirect
The alien waved from the window of his spaceship, shouting, “Farewell people of Earth!”
“Sarah said we should be ready by eight.”
“Direct speech is like this,” she said. She then proceeded to explain to the audience what indirect speech was.
Direct
The alien bid farewell to the people of Earth from his spaceship window.
Why we should use indirect:
Keeping it natural
One good way to get experience is to sit in a cafe, and write down what the people are saying.
