The Veldt by Ray Bradbury

Ray Bradbury was an American fantasy and horror author who rejected being categorized as a science fiction author, claiming that his work was based on the fantastical and unreal. His best known novel is Fahrenheit 451, a dystopian study of future American society in which critical thought is outlawed.

Bradbury decided to become a writer at about age 12 or 13. He later said that he made the decision in hopes of emulating his heroes, and to "live forever" through his fiction.

What is Imagery?

It was dark and dim in the forest.

The words “dark” and “dim” are visual images.

The children were screaming and shouting in the fields.

“Screaming” and “shouting” appeal to our sense of hearing, or auditory sense.

He whiffed the aroma of brewed coffee.

“Whiff” and “aroma” evoke our sense of smell.

What is Imagery?

The girl ran her hands on a soft satin fabric.

The idea of “soft” in this example appeals to our sense of touch, or tactile sense.

The fresh and juicy orange is very cold and sweet.

“Juicy” and “sweet” – when associated with oranges – have an effect on our sense of taste, or gustatory sense.

Think about the following while we read:

  • Cause and Effect - What causes the children’s behavior? Bad parenting? Overreliance on technology? Entitled attitude?
  • The Dangers of Technology - What are the foolish uses of technology in the story? How could it have been prevented?

We will discuss these things once we finish the story.

  • Imagery - Bradbury loves figurative language. He’s a master of sensory details.
